Homicide cop Troy Bennett had a reputation with the Chicago PD for being fearless and in control - until the night his daredevil partner is killed during a raid. From that moment on, he swears he'll never again be responsible for the loss of a loved one. To escape his demons, Troy transfers to the NYPD, bringing him up close and personal with Ruby Elliott, a beautiful, street-savvy pool hustler. Reckless and stubbornly independent, Ruby embodies everything Troy's avoiding, but when she walks into the pub he's at with his new coworkers and blows his carefully laid plans to hell, Troy knows he has to have her - risks be damned. But there's a connection between Ruby's shadowed past and a case Troy's working involving a notorious Brooklyn felon, throwing her safety into jeopardy. Confronted with his biggest fear, will Troy push Ruby away to keep her safe or fight to keep her in his arms where she belongs?

The narrator sounds like she has too much saliva in her mouth, and it really bothered me. Also, her delivery felt flat.
Other than that, I liked the book. I just wish I'd bought the ebook instead.

Liked the book, didn't like the narrator

This novella is part of two series: (1) it’s in the Line of Duty novellas which all have the same archetype of a controlling cop with a penchant for dom play and dirty talk and (2) it’s one of two prequels to the Crossing the Line series, which offer four full length books, also featuring dom-y, dirty talking cops.

This novella is also the second novella featuring Troy and Ruby. The first novella is prequel .25 in the Crossing the Line series and is titled Riskier Business.

Unlike Line of Duty’s novella 1, featuring country girl Ginger, this novella features city girl Ruby. However, just like in novella 1, she gets into trouble by charging in without her cop backup. This one lacks as much of the fun of the first one, but at novella length, that’s okay. In real life I’d avoid these personality types, but for a right-to-the-good-stuff freebie, this is a sizzling listen.

Dirty cop … but in the right way

I didn’t like the ending. There should be an epilogue to let us know what happened in the future.

Also would be better with both male and female narrators.

I love when the con gets with a cop. And this pool shark, Ruby, lures Troy in with her good looks and sassy mouth. This novella is full of suspense, and I really enjoyed Alice’s narration. I always think it’s so much harder doing solo narration, and Alice smashes it. This one had been sitting in my library for ages, and I’m glad I cracked into it.

A great story, well-paced, with characters you’ll love.

A well-paced romantic suspense novella.

I love this author, the world of characters but the narrator doesn't do it for me. I loved the other series with Jill Redfield. This narrator barely acts, no voice changes, feels monotone. is it possible to get this re-recorded? idk if publishers do that but I don't think I can listen to this whole series with the current narrator.

good but bad narrator
