Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I've enjoyed the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, and enjoyed watching John Matthew's story develop in this sequel. To be honest, though, the constant sex is getting a bit boring, and I keep skipping over those sections to get to the rest of the story. It was interesting and titillating for the first few books, but by somewhere around book 4, I really was more interested in the stories than in the sexual exploits. I think the stories would be enhanced with more focus on events, actions, and interactions of characters outside of the bedroom.

If you’ve listened to books by J. R. Ward before, how does this one compare?

This was a decent read, compared to the other books, although I felt like there was more focus on the sex than on truly developing the characters. The stories are starting to feel a bit thin, and like they're more about who is going to have sex with whom, rather than truly exploring the essence of the characters.

Overall, a good story

Book 8 - John Matthew and Xhex
I mean, it’s a brotherhood of seven foot tall bazillionaire vampires, each with hidden emotional depth and a wardrobe made entirely of leather, literally fighting to save their world while falling in love, conveniently, one at a time and in quick succession. Fantastic audio performance by Jim Frangione who, I think, does all of them.
DO NOT START HERE, please start at Book 1 (Dark Lover). I cannot imagine trying to jump into this cold without the backstory on both John Matthew and Xhex. Lots of content warnings here, especially on violence and assault.
A couple of notes about this instalment in particular:
While it’s John Matthew and Xhex’s story, you get so much about the other characters here, so it’s a really rich tapestry in an extremely well-built world.
Xhex is so hardcore, it’s amazing to get to spend time with her character in this book.
I have been a big John Matthew fan all along, but you see a totally new side of him in this book, and it’s not one that I love. Unlike many of the other vampires’ mates, Xhex is absolutely a warrior and a badass in her own right, and the journey for John Matthew (and honestly, the rest of the brotherhood) to recognise her strength and her rightful place in their world is a little too long and exhausting to my 2023 ears (it’s just so much patriarchy, and while they get to the right place, the long and arduous path out of misogyny made me tired).

Story was wonderful, perfect ending, no complaints there. I've grown accustomed to Jim Frangione's narration, no complaints there. The sound editing was_horrible_... There were a few inappropriate gaps between paragraphs that lasted far too long, and in other places, one sentence was unable to be finished before the next began. Background ambient noises were obvious at several points. The worst was when scenes were broken (for want of a better word) and the tone, volume, basic sound quality, just everything, changed mid-sentence to a completely different tone/feel, etc. and then changed back. Really, really awkward, especially during the sex scenes. Imagine reading a document written in Times New Roman 12 pt. font and all of a sudden, for no reason at all, the font changes in the middle of a paragraph to Courier 22 pt for a few sentences and then goes back to the original. Your eyes would be confused, you'd be wondering wtf, right? This was the aural version of that. Not so bad if it were a one-time slip, but this happened multiple times and seriously interrupted the flow of the story.

All that aside, this was more complex and involved than some previous books in the series, with multiple POV and a lot of layering. The ending was one of the better so far, and I was left wanting more. Just handled by a different sound editor ;)

Excellent story, awful sound editing
