t was a pool party at the neighbors’ house. A little get-together with some of their friends. People I didn’t know. That was OK. Just six couples. I noticed that. Everyone but me was a couple. My hosts told me it was a requirement. The thing was, I was single. And sixty years old. But all the guys here looked to be about my age.
The hostess, Toni, gave me a funny look. “Jeff, given that this is couples only, and you have to have a wife to attend, meet Connie Claire.” Toni turned around and looked behind us into the house, and I turned to see what she gestured toward. “Jeff, meet your wife. This is Connie Claire. Connie Claire, this is Jeff Delaney, your new husband. If you want him.”
I looked at the girl across the room. She was beautiful. And smiling at me. But her smile was... intelligent. There was something behind her eyes that almost didn’t match her blonde hair and very attractive body. I didn’t think blondes were necessarily stereotyped in any particular way, but this girl was... surprising. I was instantly attracted to her. But she had to be a lot younger than me. I was sixty. This girl was in her thirties!
