Naomi Gaede-Penner grew up listening to her father’s supper table tales. Her parents were simple, Mennonite kids in Kansas who expected to be dairy farmers. However, somewhere on the way back to the barn, her father, Elmer Gaede, took a turn and ended up at K.U. Medical School. Before Naomi knew it, she was in the Last Frontier where her father was a bush pilot doctor, and her mother, Ruby Leppke Gaede, was ordering food for a year – to be shipped on a barge – before the Yukon River froze. Later, the Gaede family got in on the last Homestead Act on the Kenai Peninsula and proved up 80 acres, which included clearing a half-mile airstrip, tree-by-tree.
Naomi's passion is documenting history in story-form; not merely for herself, but for people groups who are not writers. Her viivid childhood memories, appreciation for Alaska history, attention to research, subtle humor, and a propensity to see life as a story make Naomi’s writing lively, intergenerational, and timeless. Readers are astonished that her non-fiction Prescription for Adventure books read like fiction.
Naomi believes everyone has a story and encourages each person to find a medium to express, preserve, and pass along that story. What's YOUR Prescription for adventure?!
