This darkly comic and tragically ironic play focuses on the relationship between two seemingly opposite siblings, Austin and Lee—cunningly portrayed by Kit Harrington and Johnny Flynn—as they spar verbally and physically over several days and nights. While they dance around the truths they try so hard to hide, the feelings they can't conceal involuntarily emerge, until the nature of their relationship is revealed to be far more complicated—and simple—than expected.

Hilariousness is close to godliness

The concept is somewhat beyond belief: a Twitter account inspires a Broadway play that goes on to inspire the Audible release you are currently perusing. But, hand to god, it works. Sean Hayes reprises the Almighty role initially occupied by Jim Parsons in the first stage rendition, and does so with the off-the-cuff wit folks came to know and love him for on Will & Grace (which he points out here are two great, godly virtues—another reason Hayes is perfect for the role). The puns and one-liners come so fast even the most impatient speed-listeners will want to dial back their settings to make sure they don’t miss a single one of David Javerbaum’s cocktail-party-ready gems.

Haunted house, warm heart

Okay. I'm ready for Halloween now. This oddly dark and sweet story has completely captivated me and set me in the right frame of mind to fully appreciate this witchy, haunted season—the kind of genre-stretching reset I recommend to everyone. Ghostlove is not horror. Sure, there's creepiness—but it's not cringe-worthy. It actually hit a very child-like part of me that still exists but often needs a nudge: the ability to fully and openly suspend disbelief. I say, just go with it. Let yourself fall in love with these ghosts and dead people and lose yourself in the strange hallways and creaky floorboards of your mind. Get swept up in this spellbinding multi-cast performance and let your imagination be recharged.

Once you know, you can’t unknow

Just like the playwright and the actress in this story, I have a vague memory of hearing about femicide growing up. Not specifically about the women of Ciudad Juarez, but general acts of cruelty against women: an ex-girlfriend's face ruined with acid, a kidnapped daughter held for ransom, a black eye from "falling down the stairs." If you hear enough anecdotes, they become statistics—numbers rather than flesh-and-blood victims. Isaac Gomez has done a remarkable job in creating a play about bearing witness to these crimes, giving names and faces back to the victims. Kate del Castillo’s performance of this one-woman, multi-character, emotionally gripping play is impressive to say the least. She embodies a whole range of characters who have experienced the danger and violence of Juarez. Listening is an unforgettable experience, and that’s what makes it so great, because this is a story that needs to be told and remembered.

Dream team assembled

Okay, so close your eyes and take a second and think about your ideal dream comedy cast… Got it? Now, take a look at the cast of narrators for Escape from Virtual Island. No it wasn’t magic. We, like you, just have great taste. Paul Rudd leads this truly top-shelf comedy lineup (Jack McBrayer, Paula Pell, and Amber Ruffin, just to name a few) in this new scripted audio comedy written by John Lutz of SNL and 30 Rock. Set on a remote luxury resort island in the year 2038, adventure-seekers travel here to live out their wildest fantasies in custom-made virtual reality simulations. And I don’t want to spoil anything for you, but let’s just say it wouldn’t be a story if things didn’t go wrong, right?

Just some light-hearted kidney theft

I know, I know––you’re having such a hard time choosing between all of the full-celebrity-cast, dark-comedy audio projects about kidney thieves out there in the market and, hey, I hear ya. But this one stands out. Why? Well, we’ve got some of the funniest actors in the game here. I’m talking heavy hitters like Meg Ryan, D’Arcy Carden, Sam Richardson, Ed Begley, Jr., Rachel Bloom, and the list goes on. Not to mention how well written and smart it is. And did I mention funny? Listen, just give it a whirl. Have I ever steered you wrong? (Don’t answer that).

Cults are back, baby

On the Venn diagram of my listening preferences, The Zeta Family occupies several circles: It’s got the pacing of a thriller along with plenty of jokes, a storyline about cults, and the vocal talents of (*dies*) Natasha Lyonne. Kevin Nealon and Amy Goodmurphy round out the truly awesome cast of narrators, and the sound design is next-level. As Editor Aaron attests, "Referring to The Zeta Family as anything less than a truly original audio experience would be an understatement." I can’t wait to join the cult when this weird and wild listening adventure debuts this month!
