Marie Sklodowska, 25, is studying science at the Sorbonne—one of the only universities in the world that has begun to admit women. A thousand miles from her native Poland, with no money and the odds stacked against any woman daring to pursue a career in such a rigorous field, Marie throws herself into her studies. She’s certain that to succeed in a man’s world, she will have to go it alone.

History with heart
Listening to this short, insightful piece of historical fiction gives a first-person, intimate view of the world as it leans into the 20th century through the eyes of Marie Sklodowska—the woman and scientist who would become the famous Madame Curie. Author Paula McLain delves into Marie’s passion for scientific advancement alongside the more personal parts of her life. Clearly a woman before her time, Marie’s romance with Pierre Curie was one of equals—born of a connection between two people with a higher calling. Rather than expecting Marie to sacrifice her academic life, Pierre relished in her success. By imagining what Marie must have been feeling, she becomes just a little bit more real, more human—making for a story full of facts, figures, historical gems, and…love.

A sad story in a happy wrapper.

Capturing the intensity of feelings into words
I don’t know if memoirs are allergic to HEAs, but most of the genre’s great love stories are about losing someone you’ve loved. Hardly anyone, it seems, wants to write about their totally happy, uncomplicated romance. But when a loved one dies, they’re almost compelled to capture the intensity of their feelings in words before they can float away. Kind of beautiful, right?? Love Is a Mix Tape is my all-time favorite in this amazing microgenre of love/grief memoirs. After music journalist Rob Sheffield married the love of his life, he lost her suddenly and without warning to a pulmonary embolism at the age of 31. This memoir is his tribute to her. Through music as lovely and varied as Pat Benatar, Whitney Houston, and Pavement, he describes their epic romance through perfectly poignant pop songs, capturing both the sadness and the sweetness. And he made me see Sleater-Kinney’s song “One More Hour” in a whole new light 💔. Treat yourself to this one when you have the urge to feel some type of way, and yes: he narrates it himself, and it will make you cry.

The relationship between Freddie Mercury and Jim Hutton evolved over several months in 1984 and 1985. Even when they first slept together, Hutton had no idea who Mercury was, and, when the star told him his name, it meant nothing to him. Hutton worked as a barber at the Savoy Hotel and retained his job and his lodgings in Sutton, Surrey, for two years after moving in with Mercury. He was never fully assimilated into Mercury's jet-setting lifestyle, but, from 1985 until Mercury's death in 1991, he was closer to him than anyone and knew all Mercury's closest friends.

At its center is a romance: the story of the author's relationship with the artist Harry Dodge. This story, which includes Nelson's account of falling in love with Dodge, who is fluidly gendered, as well as her journey to and through a pregnancy, is an intimate portrayal of the complexities and joys of (queer) family making.

The labor of love that links two great boroughs
The Brooklyn Bridge is filled with romantic history. Those traveling along the promenade today will see the Sharpie-scrawled love proclamations of thousands—I confess to having one of my own included here, please don’t judge—but at the heart of this structure spanning the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn are two great love stories you won’t want to miss out on. First, John A. Robeling’s love for engineering and bridges, but more importantly Emily Warren Roebling’s love for her husband, Washington, and his legacy as she took care of both him—as he was bedridden with caisson disease—and the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge. John may have had the vision, Washington may have carried said vision on, but Emily is the hero of this story and her kind of love is what we all should be searching for.

Is it better to have loved and lost or to never have loved at all?
Narrator Xe Sands will suck you into Wendy Webb’s Daughters of the Lake, a spine-chilling tale of love and loss for both the living and the dead. Recently divorced Kate Granger is dragged into the mystery surrounding her discovery of the washed-up body of a Jane Doe and her infant. However, suspicions fall upon Kate, as she is the only person who can say she has seen the woman before…in her dreams. The love story is complicated here, beautifully woven by Wendy Webb, involving the mystery woman and a past from a different era. Kate will learn the hard way that the power of love—and betrayal—extends much farther than she thought possible.

The power of love
There are lots of different kinds of love, and Where the Forest Meets the Stars touches on many of them: child and parent, siblings, best friends, human and dog, human and nature, and of course, romantic love. And as any authentic story would show, each of these relationships comes with all sorts of complications. But what this novel does so well is to celebrate the overwhelming goodness in people—however imperfect they are, and especially in the face of adversity. It’s the kind of love-fest I think we all can appreciate because it all happens within a storyline that also includes tons of action, humor, and suspense. The lovey-dovey parts are a welcome element—making this the perfect listen to add a pinch of romance to your fiction.

One-way ticket to meet-cute, please!
I’m not a romance fan in the traditional sense, but I could write a dissertation on meet-cutes in YA novels. And when I want a rom-com, the only answer is something by Jennifer E. Smith. From stalled elevators to misdirected emails, she knows how to bring characters together, let fate wrestle them apart, and ultimately get you right in the feels. Her latest, Field Notes on Love, delivers in a big way—think strangers on a train, a broken heart (his), a film school rejection (hers), and a limited time to figure it all out.

This is a story about two teens falling in love over a summer that throws everything possible to keep them apart. Max: Chill. Sports. Gay and not a big deal. And a secret: An encounter with an older kid that makes it hard to breathe, one that he doesn't want to think about, ever. Jordan: The opposite of chill. Poetry. His "wives" and the Chandler Mall. Never been kissed and searching for Mr. Right, who probably won't like him anyway. And a secret: A spiraling out of control mother, and the knowledge that he's the only one who can keep the family from falling apart.

The Past of Slavery Still Moves and Wounds Us
- By Jefferson on 12-05-10
Beautifully imagined, incredibly difficult
Kindred has one of the most fascinating and high-concept plots I’ve ever encountered in a sci-fi novel: A modern-day Black woman, Dana, is suddenly and inexplicably thrust through time into the Antebellum south, where she experiences the horrors of slavery firsthand as she encounters a distant relative.
If that synopsis didn’t make it clear, this is both a beautifully imagined and incredibly difficult listen—a sci-fi vision grounded in history. One of the aspects that helps root the novel firmly in reality is the relationship between Dana and her husband, Kevin. Together they face the brutality of the past, the trauma of both physical and temporal separation, and the racism still very present in their own time. Their relationship is clearly not without its challenges, but they lean on one another for strength as they attempt to make sense of this strange and horrifying shared journey they are forced to encounter. It’s not exactly an HEA (we sci-fi fans can be hip to the romance lingo, too)—but there is perhaps hope for healing.

Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Delightful
- By Sally on 01-04-10
A rich story lovingly untangled
Elizabeth Gaskell's classic Victorian novel North and South definitely "counts" as a romance: the story centers around the evolving relationship between the two main characters, and the denouement delivers an "HEA" (Happily Ever After in romance parlance). But this doesn’t possess the same levity as, say, Pride and Prejudice, and that's a good thing. Gaskell jumps into the heavy issues contemporary to her day: labor disputes, the interplay between industry and class in different parts of England, poverty, and the role of the church as an arbiter of power. There is so much rich description—lovingly untangled and made accessible by the inimitable Juliette Stevenson—of a now vanished but still relevant world, that the listener walks away more educated and inspired (while also a little romanced).

Seventeen-year-old Nadia lives in Canaan, a quiet city in an idyllic world, hemmed in by high walls that are constructed of a material no one in her town recognizes. Every 12 years the people of Canaan undergo a collective Forgetting; in the days before, the town devolves into a chaos of bloody violence, and afterward the people are left without any trace of memory of themselves, their families, their lives. Nadia has never forgotten, however.

Beautiful Singular Story
- By L Swanson on 10-26-16
You’ll never forget your first love
Sharon Cameron’s lyrical novel The Forgetting has such a fresh and fascinating concept—every 12 years the citizens of Canaan experience a "Forgetting." Their memories disappear, and they must rely on journals, their own written histories, to piece together their pasts. Nadia, our heroine, remembers everything, and must live with the painful knowledge of the violence, lies, and deceit she witnesses before each Forgetting as people try to invent new futures for themselves. As Nadia seeks to uncover the secrets of the Forgetting before the next one’s imminent arrival, Gray, the glassblower’s son and her classmate, joins her on her quest. His trust in her will melt your cold, dead heart (yes you, dystopian skeptic), and the high stakes around their budding romance (if they don’t succeed, he’ll simply forget her) has you rooting for them almost immediately.

In a word, WOW
- By Kevin Potter on 03-09-19
It can be the strength of a kingdom
I so, so appreciated listening to this 25-hour-long, self-contained fantasy world that leans into love across the spectrum. It's a true epic, complete with court intrigue, a sh*t ton of dragons, and an enemy that's great enough to destroy the world if not defeated in time. But during all of that, we are following three strong women and two men in their journeys of coming of age, making mistakes, and falling in love. I particularly hung onto one relationship (I will not reveal their identities to protect you from spoilers) between two women that grew like the kindling of a fire—slow at first, and then blazingly fast. I was struck with the realization that even among the chaos in a realm on the brink of collapse, the power of two lovers' embrace could be enough to hold it together. Such could be the strength of love.

A murder mystery with a royal twist
There’s just something about the British monarchy that’s so bloody fascinating to many Americans (raises hand). And the first book in this historical mystery series, set in the UK during the Great Depression, is no exception. Lady Georgie is a young penniless royal who’s sharp-witted, no-nonsense, and unafraid to assimilate with the plebes, at least temporarily. She scoffs at some noble traditions, such as marrying for status as opposed to—gasp—love, and revels in an independent streak that leads her to run away to London and get mixed up in various crimes and shenanigans. Author Rhys Bowen, a Brit having married into an upper-class family herself, knows whereof she writes, and the result is a delightful whodunit with a healthy sprinkling of humor and romance. As for the narration, the late and beloved Katherine Kellgren brings each of the colorful characters brilliantly to life.

Story252
This is a love story like no other: Elinor Powell was an African-American nurse in the US military during World War II; Frederick Albert was a soldier in Hitler’s army, captured by the Allies and shipped to a prisoner-of-war camp in the Arizona desert. Like most other black nurses, Eleanor pulled a second-class assignment, in a dusty, sun-baked - and segregated - Western town. Brought together by unlikely circumstances and racist assumptions, Elinor and Frederick should have been bitter enemies; but instead, at the height of World War II, they fell in love.

An unexpected love and a little-known history
Few love stories are as unlikely as Elinor and Frederick’s. As a German prisoner of war and an African American nurse serving in the military, their romance was not simply taboo, but dangerous. Alexis Clark has written a thoughtful account of one of our country’s darkest hidden histories: the German POW camps scattered throughout the American West and Southwest, and the Black nurses who were stationed there. The story of Elinor, Frederick, and their family is not only touching and emotional, but offers a glimpse of making immense sacrifices for love amidst the racism and prejudice of WWII and the Jim Crow era, making this a heart wrenching (but warming) account of love I think everyone could benefit from hearing.
