But Fontane, who had escaped a bleak existence in North Dakota with nothing but determination and his soaring, lyric tenor voice, was an unhappy man who lived on a blistering hatred for (and denial of) the God of his missionary parents. In 1957 he was blindsided at a Los Angeles intersection and lay in a coma for 30 days with two broken legs, cracked vertebrae, crushed chest, broken ribs, head trauma and internal injuries.
While unconscious, Fontane received a vision from Christ, who offered him another chance at life if he would give that life to Him. Fontane agreed, and awoke to a long period of convalescence. Unable to sing because of his injuries, he made what would become one of the most famous bargains with God in Christian history – that, if God would give him back his voice, Fontane would sing only for Him.
His voice returned, and Fontane – true to his word – gave up his popular career to sing only for Christ. In just a few years, he would be one of the most famous and highly touted gospel singers in the world."A Bargain With God" is the only biography of Fontane yet written and contains material never before published.
