An ‘ordinary’ fourteen year-old, James Wiley has lost his scientist father to a parallel world in the darkbands. With the help of Becky, his sister with magic powers, Barry the exchange student and Uncle George, the werewolf, James goes in search of his parent. But he must take care: for if there just happens to be a full moon at the wrong moment, James’s itchy palms might lead him into trouble. . . This is a workmanlike novella from Zelazney—not his best, but certainly not his worst. The language and storyline reminded me of a Robert Heinlein juvenile novel. The story also looked as though it borrowed heavily from the lateral time travel concepts worked out by H. Beam Piper in his Paratime stories. I was somewhat disappointed that so little narrative dealt with the adventure in the Dark Band. I was also a little disappointed that Zelazney did so little with with the protagonist’s lycanthropy. The biggest disappointment was the synthetic narration done by the AI narrator. Flat delivery. Ill-timed pauses. Nonexistent pauses where there should’ve been pauses. It was difficult to listen to to, but I stuck it out to the end. I would suggest reading the book rather than auditing it.

AI NARRATION IS TERRIBLE
