A Farewell to Arms is a semi-autobiographical work by Ernest Hemingway. The novel was first serialized in Scribner's Magazine in the May 1929 to October 1929 issues, and published as a book in September that year. Set in the Italian campaign during World War I, the narrative is a first-person account by Frederic Henry who serves as an ambulance driver and falls in love with the beautiful English nurse Catherine Barkley. The book became Hemingway’s first best seller, made him financially independent, and established his reputation as a great novelist. A Farewell to Arms has been adapted for stage film in 1932 and television.
