Ex-cop Frank Harper doesn't want to get involved. Harper is visiting the small Ohio town of Cooper's Mill, trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter and a grandson he's never met. But he finds the town gripped in fear - two young girls have gone missing, taken in broad daylight from a busy street. And the police are coming up blank. But once Harper is drawn reluctantly into the investigation, he'll stop at nothing to find the girls. And he doesn't care who gets in the way.

This book had a slower pace. Frank is an ex-cop who specialized in missing children yet he refuses to assist in a local case when girl's start disappearing. He's an alcoholic who'd rather have his lips to a bottle than help.

I didn't like Frank much. He seemed pretty worthless to me, eventually he helps. I hope that's not a spoiler but I think any reader who starts the story will figure that out on their own.
The mystery in the story was solid and kept me listening. There's sufficient suspense most of the way through.

The plot stalls at times but is easy to follow. It's a decent book and those who love cozy mystery will most likely enjoy the story.

The jury's still out

I first bought book #2 without realizing it was part of a series. I soon figured there must be a prior book but went on and finished it anyway. It was that good. Then I went back and bought the first and third stories. Now that I've finished book 1 I'll go on to #3. I'm sure it will be just as good or even better than books 1 & 2.

A very enjoyable tale

What aspect of Mikael Naramore’s performance would you have changed?

Mikael Naramore did a good job although I thought he could have added more to the book had he used his talent a little more. He has a very pleasant voice to listen to but I think he could have used more inflections and tones for his performance. I think a narrator can make or break a book and I think this narrator just fell in the neutral zone.

Any additional comments?

I think if I were going to compare it to anything it might be to Harlan Coban's earlier work. I think Greg Enslen has a good start to a series here if that's his goal. I would like to see more from this author. I thought this was a good book based in a very realistic setting. I thought it was more of a drama as opposed to a mystery/ thriller. There are some very complicated relationships which is what the entire book is based on (father/daughter, husband/wife, unrequited love etc) Very belivable, no superman heroics etc. I found it a little predictable at times although I will say that you didn't know exactly who the culprit was until he was revealed since everyone on the side of the law was referred to by their last name and on the opposing side they called each other by first name. I would like to see more by this author, I do think there is a lot of potential here. If you find this review helpful please indicate so. I base many of my own purchases on other people's reviews and like to let them know I value their time and opinion. Thank You.

Good book based on complicated relationships

This story was a bit long. It seemed to just drag on.
I was annoyed with the swearing. And it was irritating when even the characters would mention there was too much cursing, and that would make the main character curse more.
The narrator was great though.
I returned it.

I don’t always read mystery type books as they can be so obvious. Though I had some idea of who I thought was guilty, there was enough surprise that I was surprised at the end. Good read
