CHRISSY

It was amazing coming back to this story. I'd read it back in 2021 and it was the first Tallean story I'd read- so my introduction to the species. Five years later and I'm still drawn to these guys. Getting the chance to listen to it now- and narrated by Troy Duran- was such a treat. He does great work and I really enjoy him in alien romance. Below is my original ebook review.

I loved this book! The very first page just shredded my heart. "Today Chrissy's life would end for the third time in recent memory." The first when she and her sister were abducted from Earth and sold as slaves in an alien auction- but at least they were sold as a unit. The second was when their owner sold her to a traveling merchant because she had tattoos and shorter hair than her sister's- thus separating them. The third was when that merchant sold her to a breeding facility because he had no use for her. I can't even imagine the fear and pain (and probably anger) she went through! And this is where Chrissy's story begins- in that breeding facility. Shortly thereafter, she and the other women are rescued by a group of humans and Tallean alien warriors- including the hero Zharor. While the other women are taken to a planet where humans and aliens live side-by-side as equals, Chrissy stays with Zharor and his men who are bringing her to be reunited with her sister- who is free of her owner and happily mated.

I love the Tallean species. Their features feel very different from aliens in other books I've read. They have creases in their cheeks that allow their mouths to open super wide, fangs which elongate, and 8 sharp claws on their feet. (My brain was picturing the sharp clawed feet of velociraptors). I thought it was a really interesting biology that gives this species natural weapons and identifies them as predators. They also can go into bloodlust when they fight which enhances their senses and reflexes. To watch that kind of fight must be amazing and more feral than a species that needs to fight with some kind of ray/blaster guns or swords/spears, etc.

There were a few scenes that were skipped over that I would have really loved to see- like Chrissy reuniting with her sister. She received the equivalent of a video call with her while she was on the spaceship to prove Zharor really was taking Chrissy to her. But when the time came, the chapter began with the two sisters touring the compound. I wanted the actual scene of their reunion- the first time they laid eyes on each other after being separated with the very likely possibility that they'd never see each other again. I wanted that initial reaction and hug. To not get it was a little disappointing, but not a deal breaker.

The biggest thing I didn't like was a decision Chrissy made the day or day after they arrived at Vosthea and reunited with her sister. Chrissy was working and her coworkers were talking about Zharor and how he used to sleep around with all the females and never committed to any- that he had a reputation and warned her not to fall for him. I make a note that they did state that he hadn't slept with any females in the compound for years (but his reputation still held for some reason). After getting that same story from other females, Chrissy broke things off with Zharor. She wanted to protect her heart since she was already falling for him, but didn't tell him the reason for pulling away. It is my most hated vice in books and TV- when characters don't explain or withhold information and cause misunderstandings that can usually be resolved, or problems completely avoided with simple communication. I understand she wants to protect herself, and has only known Zharor for a short time, but she didn't know these women at all. They could be jealous exes just trying to keep her away from him for all we know. I don't understand why she wouldn't talk to him first and get his side. Especially if she was so adamant about breaking it off anyway. What else would there have been to lose? But of course, thankfully, in these HEA's, things get cleared up before too long and the book doesn't make this the whole contention of the book. (As a note- this isn't a spoiler since the story summary mentions Chrissy refuses to see him once they reach Vosthea.)

I really like the world and the characters and the atmosphere of the book. With the exception of the above paragraph, there isn't pointless drama, the scenes or tension or action are exciting and well done. Overall a great book, and I'm greatly looking forward to reading all the books that came before this, as well as any sequels. I definitely recommend it!

I enjoyed listening to this book. This book picks up right where A Captive for Kean leaves off. Chrissy is pretty hesitant with everything aside from what is known to her after being held in a breeding facility but can't deny the immediate attraction to Zharor.

This book starts off with high heat fairly quickly and the chemistry between Chrissy and Zharor is magnetic.

One of the things that frustrates me the most with many alien warrior romances is how some of the women expect the aliens to act like human men despite being in a completely different culture, on a completely different planet, after weeks or months. I can't help but want to yell at them. Yes, it's a completely new and overwhelming situation, and yes many of the women have been through crazy and disgusting ordeals but COME ON! These badass and resilient women fighting to survive, who spend time observing and learning about the aliens who surround them as much as they are able, would not at that point believe an alien warrior would operate like a human man. **Gets off soap box**

That said there wasn't a whole lot of that in this book, but there was some. I was appeased mostly because home girl Chrissy saw sense pretty quickly AND recognised how wrong it was of her to assume things about her mate, apologised, and tried to fix it. THIS. This is the first book I've read with this narrative in which a female in this situation has been written to be truly and genuinely remorseful of her actions, and causing Zharor significant pain. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

We learn more about hybrid pregnancies and see some pregnant ladies kick ass (figuratively). This book gets fairly action packed toward the end and is fairly reminiscent of Sarah's ordeal in a Captive for Kean. It's ends with a very sweet HEA.

Crissy and her sister Sarah had been together at first when they were sold after being abducted from Earth. Their owner sold Chrissy and she ended up in a breeding factory. Lucky for her and all the other female slaves, they were freed and she meets Zharor for the first time. They are extremely attracted to each other from the start, but due to some misunderstanding separated. I don’t want to spoil the story, it is fun, sexy, has action, adventure and even suspense. It is a great and original story, well written, and I have read and listened to the book. As a big fan of this series I can recommend the complete series and I suggest to start with book 1 so you don’t miss any of the fun and excitement. As a fan of this author I recommend all her books, I reread each series when a new book comes out.
The narrator did an excellent job and as always it is a pleasure listening to his work and voice. I am looking forward for his next performance!!

Zharor and Crissy

I was not expecting the storyline that happened. Around Ch 11, I was annoyed with Chrissy for her gullibility and stupidly acting on rumors rather than talking to Zharor first. 100%, she was at fault, and I really felt like Zharor could do better. She listened to people she knew even less than she knew him and made poor decisions. Others even tried to tell her that even though those rumors might be true, they were old rumors. She only heard the bad and latched onto it. At one point she even expresses envy of other couples, and all I could think was “and whose fault is that?!” Yes, I yelled at the character while listening to the audiobook.

Yes. She’s a baddie in the second half and does what she needs to do to survive. But that doesn’t have anything to do with him. Emotionally/mentally, she is as strong as he is and will need to be as his mate. Eventually she realizes her error, and does her best to correct it. She’s not likely to make the same mistake twice.

Zharor is a cinnamon roll who got a raw deal in the courtship phase, but he’s a good, fierce male who has a big heart willing to forgive a misunderstanding even if it robbed him of a lot.

Oddly, the relationship isn’t really the focus of the story for the most part. This is a big turning point for hybrid couples, and that story takes center stage pretty quickly. There’s a lot of action in the second half which helps pick up the pace of the book.

It’s still a good story, and has a great pace with action and an HEA that suits the couple. Definitely recommend.

Also, Troy Duran is a great narrator for this series. He has the best growly voices, and his female voices are pretty good too.
