When wealthy widower Captain Ralph Crewe first enrolls his little daughter Sara in Miss Minchin’s Select Seminary for Young Ladies, she is set to become the school's show pupil. But tragedy soon strikes: Captain Crewe passes away after losing his fortune, and young Sara is quickly forced into servitude by the cruel Miss Minchin.

To make it through her long days as a drudge, Sara imagines herself secretly a princess, and along the way learns to treasure true friends and the kindness of mysterious benefactors.

A Sweet Story

I remember this story as a girl. I listened again as an adult and it still has a lovely charming and memorable impact. A teaching story also, about treating others. Reminiscent of Cinderella but with reality in mind.

Beautiful

A story that stimulates Character

When young Sara Crewe is left at Miss Minchin's Select Seminary for Young Ladies, it's only her temperament and strong self that keep her from becoming a very spoiled little girl. After her wealthy and loving father passes away, Sara is no longer the star pupil at the school. Instead she's forced to work as a drudge and to slave away in the very school where she once lived.

A Little Princess is one of the classics I read and reread when I was younger, the story is timeless and the characters had such a grip on me. I loved young Sara, sentimental and strong, dreamy and determined. I admired her then and even now I think she's a wonderful role model for young readers. The rest of the cast shines as well, with one of the best villains Burnett ever wrote. The plot is simple, the imagery beautiful, and I always loved those moments when Sara shows up Miss Minchin, or when she reveals the human side of herself with a bit of temper. I'd recommend it for young teens on up.

The narration by Shiromi Arserio was wonderfully done, the perfect pace and accents for each character. I especially loved her voice for Sara, it seemed to fit perfectly. I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.
