There’s not much to do in the small mining town of Dryton California, especially for high school outcasts Francis and Bodie. Deciding to break from their normal routine of video games and pizza, they attend a bonfire party where they slip into the pack and mingle with ease. That is, until the class bully and his band of goons play a cruel prank on Bodie, leaving him tearing through the woods alone and terrified, fearing for his life.

Something calls to Bodie from a derelict building, luring him into its depths where he discovers an ancient book buried in the rotted floorboards. Bodie feels the power radiating off the thing, and vows revenge after years of being harassed. Slowly, a series of crimes and accidents begins to plague the group of bullies. Bodie’s power grows with each attack, as does his brazenness and lust for blood.

The connections are too strong for him to ignore, and the gears in Francis’s mind begin to turn after a gruesome event at the annual harvest festival. Something has Bodie in its grip, and Francis knows he must do whatever it takes to save his best friend before the looming shadow inside him swallows the town whole.

A small town horror sometimes nicely small town and sometimes frustratingly so. It has a nostalgic high school kids at the carnival vibe that the supernatural elements heightens; but these paranormal horrors rarely feel well formed other than in the service of the characters. There are just eerie enough hints like a gnarly primal seeming introduction and a nicely understated conclusion. For a horror book it's not as sensational as one might expect; and at it's best this gives it a sort of 'The Craft' angsty modern character based horror feel and at worst can see a little formless. There were times I wished the horror might have evolved more but the tone is more one of a standoff; feuding friends overcome with power beyond their ability to handle. There is some backstory that comes across as somewhat matter of fact (despite an engaging prologue) and it tends to ploy atmosphere more in developing the small town vibe than unfurling phatasmagoric terrors so it's more a rural tale than a supernatural one in some ways. Overall it's a good book I enjoyed that felt unique enough while still clinging to a framework of Americana.

I have to say this audible is the most captivating that I have read or listened to. The dialog was well written and flowed beautifully. I found humor sometimes throughout the story and it wasn't forced. This is definitely a unique urban thriller and I absolutely loved it. This was my first book/audible by Stoney Brooks and I will definitely be reading more.

I highly recommend this book/audible, I will have to say listener/reader discretion advised .

Stoney Brooks' Angry Hornet Nest is an unforgettable audiobook that instantly hooks the listener with a sharp, unexpected plot twist. The emotional arc is complex: you start with genuine sympathy for the characters, which gives way to a fascinating conflict—you despise one character's choices, yet simultaneously understand the painful logic behind them.
This is a perfect listen for fans who crave chilling thrillers infused with a touch of horror and magic. It's a dark tale about friendship, possession, and the cost of revenge.
Narrator Sean Walpole does an exceptional job, ensuring the storytelling remains engaging and keeps your attention locked on the unfolding events.
