Atlas Shrugged is the "second most influential book for Americans today" after the Bible, according to a joint survey conducted by the Library of Congress and the Book of the Month Club.

This is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world - and did. Is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he fight his hardest battle not against his enemies, but against the woman he loves?

Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus and launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon. Atlas Shrugged emerged as a premier moral apologia for capitalism, a defense that had an electrifying effect on millions of readers (and now listeners) who had never heard capitalism defended in other than technical terms.

I add to the chorus that testifies to the influential nature of this book.

I have been on a decade long journey that this book has finally made salient.

I, the product of the liberal university system of the majority of the United States, a former believer of the Socialist/Communist ideologies, I have finally had the iron mask of subjugation ripped from my eyes.

If you ever winced at the subtle knot in the pit of your stomach for seemingly pointless self sacrifice, if you have ever pondered the wisdom of trying to "raise all ships", if you have ever questioned why the you should bear the costs for others mistake, please take a chance on this book.

The most frightening thing about finally coming to this work at these times is the reflection of the early years of the world of Atlas Shrugged in what is going on today in the United States.

I thank the person who led me to this book.

Cemeted a change in my life.

With all the negative reviews, I almost didn't take the time to listen to a classic. There is much to disagree with (Rand's atheism being my biggest quibble). Yes, quality was very poor. The long speeches were ponderous. The characters are not in any way real people (good guys perfect, bad guys perfectly evil). It was worth the 52 hour listen however.

Glad I listened myself

A detailed plot that shows, from roots to flower, the working out of a communistic/socialistic system. Very timely today as our goverment seeks to increase hand-outs and in doiong so take from those who provide our futures.
I could have done w/o John Galt's speech (atheistic as it was - there are better ways to show the troubles of this world w/o blaming God...perhaps one could take a better look at the root difference between God and religion).
Barring that- the book is a good read and I would recomnet it to anyone.

This is a VERY long listen, so get comfortable! This classic takes on more significance as time goes by. Some of the parts that you may be tempted to skip over contain some of the best nuggets. What I think Ayn Rand has a great hold on is the change in mindset as a society becomes more authoritarian. The slow act of giving up and giving in is so well described, and rings so true. It's a tough listen, only because the world she describes is becoming all too familiar.

The narration is well done and makes the book an easy one to listen to stylistically.

Well worth the time investment!!!!!

Reads like today's newspaper!

Whenever I hit the hardest times in my life I reread this to remind myself to get up and don't ever whine. Probably the most amazing work of fiction/social commentary and most damning for the "why not" crowd of socialist dogma. If you really want to understand things in life this book is long, but nothing worthwhile is cheap and easy... Have reread this now 8 times along with the Fountainhead and others.
