It was the year that Joe DiMaggio set his 56-game hitting streak, that Ted Williams batted .406, that the Dodgers and the Yankees battled each other in a classic World Series, and that America went to war. In this look at what he calls "the best baseball season ever", Robert Creamer skillfully intertwines all these epochal baseball happenings with an informal history of a pivotal period in American life, as well as with his own memories of what it was like to be 18 and a baseball fan when a looming war and the game he loved vied for his attention. For all who love baseball, Baseball in '41 makes it clear why the game is still the purest representation of the American Dream.©1991 Robert W. Critic reviews

"This is a baseball book, but whether Creamer intended it or not, it's much, much more." (Sports Illustrated)

Mr. Creamer hit a solid single in sharing highlights of the 1941 season. The narration was okay, but a little too automatic, like a 6-4-3 double play to end an 11-0 , 5-hit blowout. All-in-all, a B-to-B+production, and well worth the time of a baseball history geek, like me! :-)

Solid Single!

I wish someone would write a book about every baseball season. Each one is unique. This book was a joy to listen to. I highly recommend.

What a great book!

I loved the stories in this book, and really enjoyed the narrator's pace and voice. However, the formatting is not great, "Chapter 1" contains the introduction, and Chapters 1-4. it makes it a pain to get back to a specific chapter.

I really enjoyed the stories about the Yankees' dynasty. I'm no NYY fan, but the way the story is written and recorded made for such a pleasure to listen to.

Great performance, great stories, bad formatting

This was a refreshing story about an epic year for the world as we know it as well as the the game we would come to know as the National Past time (in large part because of the story presented here in the main story). It was a fascinating tapestry of memories and stories of legends like Teddy Ballgame and Jolt’n Joe as well as a cast of many others that played a part this mythical season when giants roamed the earth and baseball was king. Great writing, feel and the way it was presented was well done and a must read for anyone.
