A wronged wife goes toe to toe with her cheating husband at the polls in this hilarious and heart-lifting novel by the bestselling author of Don’t Forget to Write.

It’s a doozy of a bad day for Beverly Diamond when she catches her husband, Larry, in a compromising position with his secretary. What’s a DC suburban wife to do with a soon-to-be ex, two young kids, and no degree or financial support in 1962? Beat the louse at his own game, that’s what.

Larry runs the Maryland senatorial campaign for the incumbent candidate projected to win against his younger underdog opponent, Michael Landau. But Beverly has the pluck, political savvy, and sheer drive to push Landau’s campaign in a successful new direction, even if he already has a campaign manager who is less than pleased she has inserted herself into the race.

Now it’s rival against rival. She and Michael do make a great team…maybe in more ways than one. But with the election heating up, she needs to focus on one thing at a time. If Bev can convince Michael to go modern, pay attention to women’s issues, and learn how to dress himself properly, maybe she can show Larry exactly how much he has underestimated her their entire marriage—and make her own dreams come true in the process.

Critic reviews

“Listeners will have a grand time with Helen Laser's vibrant narration of this lively audiobook about a modern woman who is navigating the political scene in 1962 Washington, DC.… Laser magnificently crafts each strong-willed character, including feisty Beverly and her opinionated mother. Laser skillfully conveys the early '60s zeitgeist, especially the changing roles of women.”AudioFile Magazine

“[A] delightful cast of well-rounded secondary characters and sprinkled with a dash of romance, the novel shows the power of blazing one’s own trail, even against frightening odds. Readers who love strong female leads won’t want to miss this one. Highly recommended.”Historical Novels Review, Editors’ Choice

“Politics and passion make for a heady combination in Sara Goodman Confino’s new rom-com, Behind Every Good Man. Revenge, empowerment, and, of course, romance converge with ease, and readers will cheer for Beverly as she engineers the political campaign of her philandering husband’s handsome rival. Run, do not walk, to sip and savor this smart-yet-funny cocktail of a novel, the style of which is rapidly becoming Confino’s signature drink.”—Pam Jenoff, New York Times bestselling author of Code Name Sapphire

This was an excellent light hearted and humorous book. The narrators voice fit the time period, too!

Close to historical time and funny

End gets a little jumbled. Last hour or so you can feel it wrapping up but it’s fast and not fast enough at the same time. Implant about the performance - the narrator takes periodic breaks, sometimes mid sentence, I think it’s as if she’s turning the page and pausing in between. Once I noticed it it was very distracting. I’ve not experienced that in an audio book before nor with this narrator.

Good story

I have yet to listen to one of the author's books that I didn't enjoy. She's one of the few authors I automatically purchase new releases from. This book was fun. It was also interesting and educational without being preachy or politically divisive. Relatable characters and excellent storyline. Also, the affair part was handled tactfully, no graphic descriptions, which was very much appreciated! Definitely recommend!

Another winner!
