Tammy is a single mother, raising two boys in Overbrook Meadows, Texas. Dino is a gangster on a quest for ghetto fame. When their two worlds collide, it ends in a tragedy that will change both of their lives forever. Tammy is left struggling to pick up the pieces of her family, and Dino is on the run from the police and his own gang. ●●●●● EXCERPT ●●●●● Time didn’t take away her memory, however, so Tish peered under the garage door and made a decision that went against her heart and her mind and her overall sense of right and wrong. Rather than get into her car and drive away to the job that paid her utility bills, rent and car note, Tish went back to her front door and opened it. She stepped inside her quiet home and took a look back over her shoulder. She wished she hadn’t. What she saw crawling out of the garage across the street was nothing like the Dino she knew and loved and shared a bed with while her brother and sister slept and her mother worked a night shift at American Airlines. What Tish saw was nothing like anything she had ever seen outside of a movie screen or even one of the horrific nightmares that plagued her sleep when her big brother got killed. Dino slithered out of the darkness like a goblin and sprinted across the street with a speed that belied his obvious physical trauma. Tish wanted to slam the door closed before he got there. But by then she was completely terrified – not just of what sort of demon she had invited into her home, but she was also fearful of what his reaction would be if she rejected him this late in the game. Dino mounted her front steps in one leap and slammed the door closed behind himself once he rushed inside. “Lock it!” he ordered. Tish fumbled with the deadbolt while Dino peeked through the curtains at the front of the house. He looked like he had a baseball tucked under his cheekbone. Dried blood was caked all the way down his neck and under his tee shirt. His skin was ashen, his clothes matted and dusty from his stay in the garage. He brought with him a stench that was immediately recognizable as death. Dino’s eyes were wild. His hands trembled like he was running from Satan himself. “What you do?” Tish squealed. “I got shot,” Dino told her plainly. “My homeboy is dead, and some girl got shot, too. They killed a little boy.” ●●●●● © Keith Thomas Walker African American Heartfelt
