The number one global bestseller and Book of the Year 2025 for Audible, The Times, Cosmopolitan, The Economist and more.

‘How else to put this? Bloody hell’ – The Guardian
‘Jaw-dropping . . . A tell-all tome’ – Financial Times
‘A Bridget Jones’s Diary-style tale of a young woman thrown into a series of improbable situations’ – The Times

Sarah Wynn-Williams joined Facebook believing the company could change things for the better. Instead, what she encountered over seven years was so shocking that Meta obtained a legal order to silence her.

Now you can read her award-winning story. Candid and entertaining, Wynn-Williams’ account pulls back the curtain on Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg and the global elite. She exposes the true cost of Silicon Valley’s ambition, from outrageous schemes cooked up on private jets to the alarming consequences of Facebook’s aggressive pursuit of global dominance.

Careless People is an ordinary woman's gripping and darkly funny memoir that will forever change how you view the technology that runs our lives – and the unchecked power of those who control it.

Powerfully narrated by the author. With a new foreword for paperback from Naomi Alderman.

‘Amazing: of all the books in all the world Mr Free Speech Zuckerberg wants to ban, it’s the one about him’ – Marina Hyde
‘Urgently necessary reading’ – Elizabeth Day, author of The Party and Friendaholic

Critic reviews

Darkly funny and genuinely shocking: an ugly, detailed portrait of one of the most powerful companies in the world. What Wynn-Williams reveals will undoubtedly trigger her former bosses’ ire. Not only does she have the storytelling chops to unspool a gripping narrative; she also delivers the goods
Devastating . . . Wynn-Williams is a sharp and funny writer . . . a highly enjoyable read — a Bridget Jones’s Diary-style tale of a young woman thrown into a series of improbable situations
Jaw-dropping . . . A tell-all tome
Amazing: of all the books in all the world Mr Free Speech Zuckerberg wants to ban, it’s the one about him (Marina Hyde, The Guardian)
A shocking, darkly funny and highly critical exposé
A morality tale for our times . . . How else to put this? – bloody hell
Staggering . . . spectacular
Urgently necessary reading (Elizabeth Day, author of The Party and Friendaholic)
Well-written, funny, horrifying, and quite compelling. I was on the edge of my seat, turning pages as fast as I could and ended up reading the book in less than a day. I cackled. I gasped. I laughed. I cringed. I cackled some more. I cringed some more (Roxanne Gay, author of Hunger and Bad Feminist)
Wynn-Williams writes with the kind of precise fury that can only come from someone who's been inside the beast (Jake Adelstein, journalist and author of Tokyo Vice)
Unbelievable and necessary . . . wonderfully written, propulsive, novelistic and laugh-out-loud at times (Maria Semple, bestselling author of Where'd You Go, Bernadette)
Jaw-dropping . . . It's a story that will fire you up, and make you want to fight back (Glamour)
A well-written bombshell (Jonathan Haidt, bestselling author of The Anxious Generation)
Compulsively readable . . . An addictive exposé, filled with explosive allegations . . . Writing this book is perhaps the best thing she did to help to achieve the kind of regulation we urgently need to preserve democracy
I love Careless People (Reverend Richard Coles, author of Murder Before Evensong)
A fascinating exposé of life and culture at Facebook. I couldn’t put it down. It’s high-octane drama in the real world, and it’s equal parts entertaining and horrifying (V.E. Schwab)
Reads like a thriller, a farce, a caper . . . There are extraordinary revelations on every page (Pandora Sykes, journalist and broadcaster)

The book is full of valuable insights. The top executives at Facebook (now Meta) are much like many other tech entrepreneurs who quickly amass wealth. While they may be skilled engineers and fortunate businessmen, they are also narrow-minded, selfish, and dishonest, with little understanding of decency. Unfortunately, they exploit platform’s users and engage in deals with authoritarian regimes. The more power they accumulate, the greater the threat they pose to humanity.

I applaud the courageous author of this book.

When the 5 horseman of the apocalypse attended dt's church service, we should've been afraid, very afraid.

Frankly frightening

Great book. Highly recommend. I’m really glad that the author didn’t go too gently on her own role in the story.

Gripping Account of the Time We Live In

Very interesting and eye opening account of the authors time at facebook. Quite a few of her anecdotes shocked and saddened me. I enjoyed hearing the book being read by Sarah herself, it felt more personal hearing her story. This is a must listen if you care about social media, how it affects people and its potential for future use and misuse.

Eye opening and gripping
