Eighteen-year-old Carissa Schultz hangs between childhood and adulthood. While trying to navigate college, her health, and her growing independence, she feels a calling on her life to change things for the generation following her.

Born with a severe birth defect called spina bifida, Carissa has already overcome many challenges in her life, but can she find it in herself to follow her calling and keep her health in check while Isaac, a young man with dreams and ambitions of his own, is competing for her attention?

I have Spina Bifida, so I was excited to listen to a book which had a protagonist with it as well. Sadly, the poor writing, factual inaccuracies, ableism and thinly veiled pro-life propaganda became a major distraction.

Spoiler alert and things to consider:

The book never develops the main characters. They were not complex or believable.

The writer needs to understand lexicon preferred by the disability community and refrain from offensive language such as the R-word.

The author never explains how Betty Carter becomes an activist in the fight for ADA 10 years before she acquires a disability. The timeline doesn’t match up.

The narrator needs a better vocal range if she is going to perform male voices.

Overall I was very disappointed.
