In a world devastated by plague, Willa has spent her life on the run: both from the mysterious illness that destroys the ability to dream and a secret that would get her imprisoned forever.

But when an unknown power calls her to the top of a high rise one night, there is no outrunning it. Willa falls headfirst into a world shaped by dark dreams and wild magic, a once vibrant kingdom now held in the malevolent thrall of a man carved straight from nightmares—the Carrion King.

To keep her secrets safe from the cruel and cunning king, Willa makes a dangerous bargain that will determine the fate of both their worlds. But as Willa is drawn deeper into the Carrion King’s seductive realm, she discovers far more than she expected beneath his lethal exterior. The line begins to blur between hate and love, the true and the imagined, and she soon realizes victory may cost not only her freedom, but her heart.

In a fairytale land of dreams, where the fantastical is more tangible than reality, Willa must decide whether to sacrifice everything as a hero or become a villain to save herself.

Author’s note: In the Darkly Dreaming universe, there are infinite worlds and realms. Somewhere, the stories of Peter Pan we were told as children are playing out alongside this one, a far darker tale. So, while Carrion is based in Neverland lore, the events and characters are different from those you’ve heard before. We’ve done exactly what Pan always feared we would—we grew up. And perhaps, our stories grow with us. Now we’re old enough to realize there was no hero in Neverland, and often times, nightmares are far more corporeal than the sweetness of dreams.

Carrion is an adult fantasy romance, intended for mature audiences. Listeners are encouraged to check content warnings, available on the author’s website.

Get ready to rediscover the power of imagination and the potential of dreams. This dark fantasy romance.

Beautifully written exploration of trauma, desolation, fear, and extreme loneliness and finding yourself, the idea of home, and unconditional love. This book ends on a cliffhanger.

Phenomenal performances by Jacci and Brandon!

I cannot wait for the next book!

Peter Pan Retelling like you've never imagined

I was hooked and pretty immersed in the story very quickly. I would actually give this book closer to a 4.5 rating. I am a sucker for a Peter Pan retelling especially a dark one! My only complaint about the Audiobook book was the giggles or laughing, it was too much. Overall I would definitely recommend and look forward to the 2nd part of this duology.

All those who love a great, dark Peter Pan retelling...READ THIS BOOK!

I absolutely loved this re-imagined fairytale of Peter Pan. The slow burn romance was a bit too slow, but the tension and yearning was tangible. The ending had me wanting more, I can’t wait for the second book!

It has been an extremely long time since I’ve had a book where I felt so viscerally both love and hate for the story.

This is an interesting and unique retelling of the Peter Pan fairytale. But don’t expect to find the characters from that source, this truly is its own story about what the loss of imagination can do to a society and how brutally feral children can. Crime without boundaries.

I’ll be honest, the opening act was very offputting and I strongly considered DNFing. In media res works well in some stories, but I definitely feel like it hurts this one. We don’t get a true sense of Willa’s ordinary world or her as a person before she’s thrust into Letum. And to be honest, she is such a heinous bitch that you really struggle to connect with her at any level.

BUT, Niko does suck you in early on. If he hadn’t been so intriguing, I definitely would have DNFed. For the first several chapters, I found myself skimming several of hers to get to his. Of course he’s dark, lethal, and mysterious (and if you’re listening to the audiobooks, he has a delicious accent that you want to roll around in), but there’s also a pained nuance to him that I appreciated.

The prose are written quite beautifully, but I will say the one downside is that it can also be a little TOO descriptive. Especially when it comes to the inner thoughts during a discussion. When it’s been 1 to 2 pages of inner thoughts and you forget what the last person said so you have to go back to recap…that’s a bit too much.

You also won’t be disappointed with the spice!

You will also get to enjoy some great found family, coming into one’s power, and a deep love. The ending will also make you shake your head. Because, of course, Willa makes it all about her 🙄

I am definitely intrigued to see where the next book takes this story though!

This was a strong love/hate relationship for me

I read this book last year when it came out, and getting to hear it brought to life on audio now was absolutely incredible. The story is an absolute fave. The narrators did an outstanding performance, so much emotion in their voices. This is an adult, dark fantasy romamce. If that's your thing, I highly recommend this book in any format!
