Now, The Holy Ghost tells us that Faith then cometh by hearing (Rom. 10:17). This shows that in matters pertaining to salvation, preaching is everything. However, effective preaching is not to the ear but to the heart. And so did St. Francis exhort: "Preach the Gospel at all times;" adding (as is popularly believed) "and if necessary, use words." So, we may ask, what will convert another? The Curé of Ars provides the answer: "The sanctity of one's own life!" telling us, moreover, that "the sermons of the Saints are their examples."
Enter Brother Juniper: a simple, spiritually childlike soul, whose manner of serving God and neighbor were often inimical to the preferred ways of the more sophisticated among the brethren. Yet, upon reflection, St. Francis himself saw in this humble friar with a radical penchant for generosity and self-abasement, a model for the entire Order: "I would, my Brethren, that we had a large forest of such Junipers, and I tell you that he who attains to the simplicity of Brother Juniper, is a true Friar Minor."
And when Brother's Juniper's well intentioned efforts did not initially work out as hoped, instead of being crestfallen, he rather, as it were, seemed to say to the Lord (like St. Faustina): "I am Your little child.... Jesus, You know what little children do." And the Lord, on His part, because of his childlike trust and simplicity, would soon bring about a much greater good than could have been imagined had Brother Juniper initially executed God's Will, ostensibly, more perfectly.
In this book, we have assembled and present more than a dozen celebrated stories pertaining to the salvific endeavors of this remarkable Friar whose unusual but endearing ways will undoubtedly be fully comprehended only on the Last Day.
