For three years Laura Drake has watched Senator Pete Worthington promote a series of gorgeous women while she sits in a forgotten corner answering constituent letters on an outdated computer. When Worthington asks her to find an elusive file one Friday night he sets off a series of events that brands her as a killer and puts her life in jeopardy. The path she sets out on forces her to confront not only the nature of evil but the ghosts from her past that have never been set to rest.

FBI Agent Dalton Ross transferred from Chicago to Washington to escape his own ghosts. When his investigation leads him to Laura he's torn between his desire to keep her safe and the need to protect his own heart. As the mystery that surrounds them deepens, Laura and Dalton race to save themselves and the nation from someone willing to sacrifice anything to protect a secret.

If you’re able to suspend your disbelief then this might be a good book for you. There were things I liked about this book but certain things niggled at me. Most specifically, the showdown with the thugs with guns and the hero was unrealistic. Beyond things like that, though, I did enjoy the book. I’m a political junkie so there was lots in this book that I could sink my teeth into.

Laura Drake was an interesting character. She’s unappreciated in her political job and wears unflattering clothes and lives a boring life. She has reasons for being the way she is and they are eventually revealed. Dalton Ross has his own reasons for trying to make a life in DC and meeting Laura has him breaking all kinds of rules. Together they have to bring down some bad guys.

Susan Phillips Bari has a distinctive voice and I suggest you listen to the sample. I had to play the book on high volume and her constant swallowing took some getting used to. Once I was into the story I was able to cope.

There are some good things about this book, to be sure, including the thriller aspects. Just be prepared to suspend your disbelief and you should be fine.

After 3 chapters I’m bored stiff with this book. It’s completely monotone and almost impossible to follow along.
