Why are the hot guys always straight?

Gus is off men, thanks to his jackass of an ex. He’s put his focus on becoming Boston’s first amputee paramedic and doesn’t care that his new rookie partner wants the same job. Or that the straight, married dad is all wrong for him.

Madoc never imagined having to restart his career. But he’ll do anything to make a better life for his daughter, even if it means reporting to a hotshot who wants the job Madoc deserves. A guy Madoc can’t stop thinking about no matter how hard he tries.

The partners strike up a friendship, supporting each other after Gus is injured and Madoc’s ex-wife abandons the family. But when crushes become real attraction and Gus bonds with Madoc’s child, will Madoc be ready to stop playing it straight?

I enjoyed Gus and Madoc's story as much as book one. Both Gus and Madoc have been and are still going through quite a bit. Their story was entertaining to read as they worked their way to a happily ever after. I enjoyed the audiobook for this one. Kevin Earlywine does a good job bringing it to life.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

Things start tense between these two. They find their footing then they find the love. The narrator did a good job bringing their story to our ears.

Original Ebook Review-

'“A reminder of what?” he asked softly.
“That it’s cool to just be yourself.”
Madoc’s lips quirked up at the corners. “That is the corniest thing you’ve ever said to me.”
He met Gus’s gaze, the expression in his eyes so tender and broken, Gus had to kiss him.'

I really enjoyed this book. I loved Gus the most, and did like Madoc after I warmed up to him. They were realistic and relatable. I also liked Gus's drive, and not letting being an amputee stop him from working hard towards his goals. The two have great chemistry once the initial rivalry passed. I also like the bonding time with Val. 4 stars.

Update Audiobook Review 1/12/26-

I remember I enjoyed reading this book last year and was looking forward to listening to it in audio. Kevin Earlywine did a good job narrating these characters. I thought his voice suited them.

Kevin Earylwine makes a three star read for me an overall four star listen. Even with his beautiful work I still cannot completely get over some of the hang ups that I did have while reading vs listening to the story. Kevin knocked it out of the park with his way of storytelling making it an enjoyable listen.

Gus is one of those characters that you cannot help but root from the getgo. Now Maddoc takes a while to warm up to, his daughter is a scene stealer each and every dang time, loved her! This is one of those romances that felt real, and you could see the events occurring outside of the book world. Even though Maddoc does mess up multiple times, you feel his sincerity when he makes his amends to get back into the good graces of Gus. Gus has his hesitance and oh boy do you get it, he has had a rough go at it but still shows his strength of character in every day and you keep rooting for him to find his deserved happiness.
