A murder on stage. A cast full of suspects. Can dresser Jayne unravel the mystery?

It is opening night at the London Palladium, and tensions are running high amongst the feuding cast of "Leopard Spots." Amongst them are an ageing lothario, a national treasure, an amateur psychic and a comedian-turned actor all vying for the spotlight.

When an on-stage accident forces an unexpected intermission, it is clear only to dresser Jayne that the drama has turned deadly. Can she step out of the wings and identify the killer before it is too late? Or will murder make an encore...

At the beginning I was overwhelmed by the number of characters. There is a good and helpful description of each at the beginning, but I'm bad with names and this is an audio book. So I decided to go with the flow and not to worry about getting every name right from the onset. And then enjoyed it so much I listened every chance I had and completed the book in two days.
This is a classical whodunit in structure: there's a murder and an amateur sleuth who identifies the killer from among a closed group of suspects. There is even the classic-gathering-of-all-involved-in-a-room for the big reveal. But still the mystery is not the point - the characters, the style, the atmosphere take center stage (sorry for the punny cliche). The first mystery I've read that I didn't really care whodunit.
Waiting for the next book.

Fun

Julian’s voice guides the listener through a most entertaining…and surprising…theatre-based mystery. The characters are true to life and so believable. Delightful

Delicious listening

I enjoy Julian Clary, but was disappointed by this. I was hoping to enjoy his delicious voice reading a classic cozy mystery story. Instead multiple actors read diary entries and expositional newspaper clippings. The structure made it dull, even with Clary's inclusion of himself as a character with great theatrical anecdotes. There are some lovely descriptions, even snicker-worthy humour, but that wasn't enough to make me care about any of these cardboard people. I called curtain around chapter 5.

Clever, without being engaging
