An intense crime fiction thriller filled with mystery and suspense.

How far would you go for the person who broke your heart? John Cutler is about to find out.

When a past love calls for help, John Cutler returns to Seattle. He didn’t want to go, but she offered the one thing he needed more than distance from her—money.

After the former cop arrives in the Emerald City, old feelings resurface, and new lies are told. Soon, Cutler doesn’t know which way is up, and that’s a dangerous place to be.

Influential people are in the orbit of this past love, and they want to silence a secret she keeps. Money and political connections lead to corruption and intimidation. Murder is only a heartbeat away.

As he gets closer to the truth, does death await Cutler?

An exciting mystery you won’t want to put down.

This gripping series is perfect for fans of Lawrence Block’s Matt Scudder mysteries and Robert B. Parker’s Spenser novels.

I enjoyed the mystery and the many avenues it takes Cutler down to solve it. A very well done twisty plot in an underworld of murderers, corrupt politics and Cutler's own poor decisions that put him in this place. And Cutler will do anything to solve it - including break the law. It's not like they can fire him from the police department twice, right?
It's one of the things I like about Colin Conway's books and characters - they are great mysteries with people I can't completely like or agree with in the decisions they make, but they grow a little within each story. Conway's characters are complicated. Some are good people, some make poor decisions and make up for them and some are just rotten. Cutler has made a lot of mistakes in his life, continues to make mistakes, but he grows at least a little by the end of the book. I like his relationship with his daughter. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with all of these characters in the next book.

Great mystery and detective work
