It took me so long to get into this book. I’d say about half way through it finally gripped me and I really enjoyed the second half! The audiobook helped a ton as well! Once I was into it, it was very fun. Action packed, wonderful allegory, cute romance, and my favorite, a dragon 😍🐉

I’ve listened to Darkfell twice now and plan to reread again and again in the years to come. A wonderful story with wonderful narration!

For the most part I enjoyed this story. I won't say it was groundbreaking or an epic story, but a solid story in the fantasy genre. I felt the portion of the story spent in the demonic realm was a bit lackluster. The start of that arc was great and had solid pacing, but at the end it felt like things got rushed because the character needed to escape with this item, and this person, and that thing, so the final arc could happen. Also, I am not sure how you can see someone has deep compassion and quiet strength from looking in their eyes. Lastly on the story, while I understand this is Christian fantasy, calling the creator Elohim is a bit on the nose compared to the more original names given to others and in the beginning it felt a little off. Like the author is holding a big sign saying "Christian fantasy!!" every time the name is mentioned.

On the part of the narrator, they did a competent job in reading the story and I was able to understand the whole book as it was read. My main two points were the inconsistency of the performance to the book and those harsh S sounds. This was not constant by any means, but there were instances where I sometimes got lost in who is talking because there was little difference in the tone between the character portrayals. Second was that sometimes the acting for the voice didn't quite match what was happening. Like if someone was supposed to be whispering and it's read in a normal voice instead of trying to imitate a whisper. Finally those S sounds, my goodness. When I was listening to this on bluetooth while driving, the S sounds were so harsh it made it hard to listen to. I think if the narrator worked on their acting and fixed those S sound peaks, they could be top tier.

I absolutely loved this book. It is a solid clean read. I would honestly rate it PG, but becasue of the battles it wouldn't be suitable for young minds. i woukd say tween and up depending on maturity. There are battle scenes but they are not very graphic. Compared to today's standards they are mild. The Narrator was by far one of the best I have heard in a long time. I loved the way he voiced Tarell. The book had funny moments, to off set the serious parts of the book so that you were dragged down while you were listening to the story. I would highly recommend this book for fans of Frank Peretti which is totally what it reminded me of. Or vice versa, if you loved this book you would love books by Frank Peretti.
