When the village of Shrewsbury's own sheriff, Gilbert Prestcote, is taken prisoner by the Empress Maud's forces, its citizens are prepared to exchange him for a man of equal value they have within their possession. But soon after Prestcote arrives for the prisoner exchange, he dies. Was it death by natural causes or a most unnatural murder?©1984 Ellis Peters (P)1993 Recorded Books, LLC Mystery Historical Suspense Detective Fiction Thriller & Suspense Traditional Detectives

How does Hugh become Sheriff? Well here you go great stuff. Well worth more than one listen. I do not want to give it away, but Sister Magdalen is back proving that redemption can precede contrition.! As always a moral but still EXCITING story. Peters handles morality without being stuffy. If you are sick of smut but still want to be engaged give Cafael a try.

Excellent cultural slice of border life

Very complex plot. I got lost several times and couldn’t care for the characters whose fate mattered little to me.

Not my favorite Cadfael’s story

Like many others, I was introduced to Brother Cadfael through Masterpiece Mystery, and though it is hard to get the image of Derek Jacobi out of my mind when I am listening to these stories, Patrick Tull does an exceptional job narrating the story. For me, these stories are a nice blend of history and mystery. Who could ask for more?

Hooray for Brother Cadfael

This is a story of the unbreakable bond between two men who, though not related, were bound together by brotherly love. It speaks of stepping across the line in the passion of a moment, thinking you're doing something to help, but it leads to devastation on a massive scale. This series gets better with each book. The Lord Sheriff Prescott is murdered and Hugh and Cadfael go on the hunt for his murderer. It turns out to be one you'd least suspect.
