Cast out of her family, Larken Hale, the Daughter of the Military, is forced to take up the cause to appease her family. Leaving everything she knows and loves behind, Larken sets out and tries to find her own way.

Captain Soren Deckard has only ever known the military, and he understands what is expected of him. But when the District Heiress joins the squad he has worked so hard to perfect, she turns everything he thought he knew upside down.

When their two lives clash together, it seems like nothing will survive the carnage. Together, they must learn to trust and accept the other. But when feelings and emotions are set on fire, will the two make it out to the other side?

The narrator was good, only one character where her voice sometimes bothered me.

As for the story itself, i guess i was expecting something different? Instead of a dystopian adventure or war, it felt like a romance. There was constantly talk of physical attraction. Everything was about the physical attraction more than any other form. It never was inappropriate (unless there was an innuendo from the many unsavory side characters) The mc seems to have a crush on 3 different people but is keeping herself in weird situations. she dislikes one personality wise but keeps dating him. Im not a huge fan of romance and tho i expected some cause thats just how books be most the time lol it just felt…like it was the whole story when the cover advertises it as more a dystopia or sci fi story which we barely get a taste of besides a couple small attacks on the characters. Maybe im misremembering but i was also under the impression this was an esther biblical retelling and i love retellings but i got absolutely no retelling vibes from this, i can see almost no inspiration from the book of esther in this so far. From what I understand this is a trilogy. And the author does write well enough to make me invested in the characters individually and i do want to know if they get the things they want, but plot wise its just not my personal taste and im not sure i can convince myself to continue if the next book is as much like this one…

Good narration, not personally fan of story

I loved this premise of a Christian sci-fi book. it was captivating until the same pattern started repeating: something happened to only the main character, she gets really emotional and disregards everyone else's feelings, and everyone caters to her every need (which seems unrealistic). It doesn't feel natural that the whole squad are so zealous about her out of nowhere, too. I also wish they worshiped Christ directly, instead of Maxum. It was a good book, but with just a few differences I think it could have been great.

Good premise, lacking realism

I thoroughly enjoyed the cast of this story! Each character was unique and easy to love. Well done to the author and the narrator!
