From Henry VIII dispatching his numerous wives to Edward VIII’s unprecedented abdication, Britain’s monarchs have personally been responsible for shaping some of the most dramatic events in the nation’s history.

Encompassing murder, civil war, adultery, usurpation, and madness, Divorced, Beheaded, Died... relates the extraordinary stories of all of England’s kings and queens, plus some of the less well-known Scots and Welsh rulers.

One of the few times I think this would be better as a printed book, but still interesting for all that.

And oh my goodness, some of the early history was definitely racy. Lots of Kingly murders, adultery, intrigue and some bizarre facts (like the king who had been a leper but cured by the restorative mud at what is now the City of Bath, or the King that was gruesomely murdered by poker).

Early Royals (Roman, Viking, Saxon) get a short, succinct sections, the more recent monarchs are more detailed out.

Whilst it does have it amusing moments this is mostly an interest factual book, that flows along fairly well, (thankfully in chronological order). I knew a bit of the English history, but it was interesting to get the Welsh and Scottish information (major monarchs only, last two chapters).

Recommended to listeners who are interested in the British Monarchy, but like their history “light”. I don’t think I would re-read but will definitely keep an eye out for the book.

Entertaining look at history, not dry, dull or boring. Capsule comments that give an interesting perspective on the British monarchy. Ric Jerrom has a great voice. Enjoyed every moment of it. Wish there were more books of this nature to listen to.
