Eighty-three-year-old Edna Edleton has lived much of her life on her own. After a painful adolescence and a few failed relationships left her lonelier than ever, she built a shield around her heart knowing it was best not to let people get too close to her for fear they would leave her just like everyone she ever loved.

Now a well-aged woman, she lives at the end of a quiet street, in a quiet house, with a sometimes quiet cat, Daisy. She knows the townsfolk think she is finicky and a bit eccentric, but Edna has no desire to impress any of them. She sticks to her puzzles, her flower gardens, and her nightly television programming.

When the vacant house across the street suddenly inhibits a new tenant, Edna is less than thrilled.

Max Fortune hopes that Williamsville is where his life will finally take off. Unlike Edna, he craves companionship and would love nothing more than to meet someone and start a family.

After a minor injury leaves Edna to rely on Max, they have no choice but to get to know one another. Max is thrilled. Edna is not.

When nineteen-year-old Hailey stumbles into their path, a little down on her luck, Max is eager to help her too, even though Edna urges against it.

As the yarns of this unlikely trio weave their way into each other’s lives, they all must examine the importance of asking for help, recognize that new friendships come at all ages, and accept that sometimes the greatest people come into our lives at just the right moment.
