Argentina is healing post-dictatorship. Rose, a journalist and grief-stricken mother, seeks revenge for the loss of her son.

Rose’s life changes overnight when her son disappears at the hands of the Argentine military. Guilt drives her to chip away at the wall of silence until she finds someone to punish. Like the saddest of tangos, Rose betrays each dance partner in turn, unable to accept her role in Rodolfo’s death. The daughter of a wealthy Englishman, her expectations are high, and she gambles her marriage, career and friends to avoid the truth. An arrest imminent, Rose must say goodbye to all she knows.

This beautiful tale of post dictatorship Argentina and one woman’s search for her ‘disappeared’ son is a wonderful ride. The author must know an awful lot about the tango as the dance plays gorgeously all through this story, through love and cruelty, secrets and laughter, all against the bigger picture of the cruel world of the Argentinian dictatorship. ‘Democracy’ may have arrived but that doesn’t mean justice has, nor does it mean the scars are healed or that the disappeared are reunited with their families. Searingly honest, harsh and elegantly written, this is a great book that deserves to be read and listened to. The narrator does a great job conveying all the complex characters and the emotional journey. Highly recommended!

Tango. The Disappeared of Argentina. And one woman’s search for justice for her son.
