If my mother knew what I was doing, her rage would melt the entire Silver City. But I have no choice, not if I want to save the Northern Kingdom and everyone I hold dear. In this court of vipers and vultures, can I trust the man who I was sent to kill or is he using me for his own goals?

I eagerly awaited this sequel up until its release and now I am happily devastated that I'll need to wait for another!

Fantastic!

Emperor’s Wrath sharpens the political tension of the first book, forcing Airón and Tallu into harsher choices as the empire fractures around them. The escalating conspiracies, shadowy factions, and tightening proximity between the two make the emotional stakes feel heavier but their lack of communication about their feelings leads to frustrating plots which softens a few key moments that could land harder. Still, Butler fully delivers a tense, character-driven sequel that deepens the bond between assassin and emperor while setting the stage for an explosive finale!

The seeds of intrigue planted in book one, grow into a messy garden. The tight focus of the first book isn't found here as the world expands. The inner workings of court and the empire's armies literally explode before us. Fortunately the relationship before Airon and Tallu continues to be intriguing. The fracturing empire should be the focus but the need to maintain the fantasy elements of the story begin to really fracture the story itself. The narration remains quite good, aside from the those talking birds. This title is worth the listen if you enjoyed the first book. Just keep in mind that if you don't love as much, the third book will absolutely grate on your nerves.

Overall a good listen, but not like book 1
