In a series of genre-blending essays, Entwined tells the story of Alex Alberto’s decade-long polyamorous journey toward a new kind of family. In these essays, Alex attempts to build two committed relationships at once when no one involved has done it before; develops a powerful bond with the woman their partner loves; comes out to religious in-laws during a tense Thanksgiving dinner; questions the need for rules and hierarchy in their relationships; experiences the intensity of a triad; wrestles with the fragility baked into the nuclear family after their father’s stroke; and explores their queerness and gender identity in English, in New York, while struggling to reconcile their newfound self in their native French-Canadian language and culture.

Entwined explores the fuzzy lines between friendship, romance, and family with various essay forms, including a play, an advice column, and a love letter. Rather than wallowing in the throes of jealousy, this collection celebrates the hard work, humor, and wisdom needed to create a love life that resists conventional narratives.

Beautifully written, funny & insightful. Certainly a unique perspective on an under-represented emerging societal segment. Only slight negative is a few distracting cadence and syntax peculiarities in the reading. Overall it is an important part of our zeitgeist that makes one better for having read.

All around great book!

This book is unlike anything I’ve ever read. Alberto’s 10-year journey of discovery (polyamory, gender identity) is sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, but always entertaining and enlightening. I love that the author narrates the book themself, because you can really feel the emotion of every experience and realization. The hint of their French Canadian accent just adds to the feeling that you’re a new friend listening to a great storyteller regale you with the twists and turns of a life (much) less traveled. The wisdom and empathy Alberto has developed, and their unique perspective of relationships, has changed the way I think about romance and friendship in my own life. It’s a really special book!

as someone young who is a couple years deep into their polyamory journey, this book was a welcome and appreciated ally. it’s just so important to hear stories possibility modeling diverse relationship structures. i think one of my main takeaways is the power of polyamory to create chosen family relationship networks- and this is a longing that lives in my heart as well.

a storytelling resource i’ve been searching for
