“Passionate summary of the inhuman treatment of the Jewish people in Europe, of the exodus in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to Palestine, and of the triumphant founding of the new Israel.”—The New York Times

Exodus is an international publishing phenomenon—the towering novel of the twentieth century's most dramatic geopolitical event.  Leon Uris magnificently portrays the birth of a new nation in the midst of enemies—the beginning of an earthshaking struggle for power.  Here is the tale that swept the world with its fury: the story of an American nurse, an Israeli freedom fighter caught up in a glorious, heartbreaking, triumphant era. So much to love about the story. I loved the story of Israel and the struggle to build it. However, it almost became a Harlequin Romance level love of Israel who could do no wrong. While there wasn't a reference to an Arab town or maybe even a person that wasn't surrounded by adjectives like, filthy, stinking or lazy.
Hard to deny this was a compelling, well-researched novel. The ending was a bit of soap-opera over the top drama.
I think it is definitely worth your time, you don't have to agree with the authors love of Zionism to recognize how compelling and well-crafted the story is. The stories of the fictional characters surviving the ghetto and the concentration camps were gut-wrenching and certainly based on the truth.
Overall, I would recommend this book and did enjoy it despite my criticism. The narration was superb and added to my enjoyment.

Wanted to Love it.., not quite

I really appreciate Paul Michael's narration. He gave just enough distinction to each character that I regularly found myself visualizing conversations as if I were there. And what a powerful story! Uris brings this to life on both an emotional and spiritual level. Very moving and inspiring!

Great narration!

I love this book and read it years ago along with seeing the movie. I decided to re-experience the story again before visiting Israel and I was thrilled with narrator Paul Michael's delivery. Highly recommended before any Israel trip!

For once, an audiobook narrator who does the story justice!

I found the story compelling. Only my second Uris but he writes driving narrative. He pulls together so many seemingly tangential elements to weave a breath taking narrative. On top of that, the performer is unsurpassed! He does a range of accents effortlessly, making it sound like a community of actors! Superb!

Brilliant story, brilliantly performed

You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate the struggle of the birth of Israel. A must read for anyone who's curious about the conflict and why it persist today.
