Narrated by Viola Davis

In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever.

This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. We are forced to reinvent them to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world. So I wrote this for anyone running through life untethered, desperate and clawing their way through murky memories, trying to get to some form of self-love. For anyone who needs reminding that a life worth living can only be born from radical honesty and the courage to shed facades and be . . . you.

Finding Me is a deep reflection, a promise, and a love letter of sorts to self. My hope is that my story will inspire you to light up your own life with creative expression and rediscover who you were before the world put a label on you.

Editor's Pick

One beautiful woman
Viola Davis and I go way back to the days she appeared on my favorite show, Law & Order. I often wondered why she wasn’t glammed up all that much. I suspected it was her dark skin that didn’t elicit glamour once upon a time. It certainly was the reason she had to run home every day, away from a pack of boys who called her names and threatened her because they found her dark and ugly. She ran fast with shoes a couple of sizes too small and holes in their soles. Viola Davis is a knockout! She’s one of the best in the business, delivering seamlessly powerful performances. At 53, she started doing the work on her scars from the past. Her therapist pointed out that the little girl from Central Falls, RI, was the hero. Viola let her in, and here she is, folks. Her memoir will put some pep in your spring. —Yvonne D., Audible Editor

I am an avid reader of non-fiction and memoirs. Viola absolutely astounded me with this work. As much as I’ve loved her through the years, I’ve never been more impressed. Highly recommend listening to the audio version! Hearing her story in her voice is incomparable to reading, in my opinion.

The best book I’ve ever read/heard.

I picked up this read or should I say audio because I love the woman, Viola Davis. I see myself In her when she’s acting and playing different roles. Ironically she explains how she deliberately sets that up as one of her goals on stage and on screen. When I saw she had this book out I had to find a way to get to know her. Finding me was it, but I can’t sit down and finish a book. I’m a mom wife and have a full time career, all of which take so much of my time and energy. When I heard she was the one narrating it, I was sold and came here to audible to give it a try. I finished the audio within a day and a half still cooking cleaning and on my day off. What a therapeutic feeling of completion that left me with questions about myself and my struggles and past experiences that I try to forget. However she reminded me to look back and seek to find and define myself. Thank you Viola, you are amazing!

She made me do it!!! And I love her for it!

At least once a month, a try to read a memoir. It’s my favorite genre. This is by far the best one I’ve read in 2025. Her story is raw and heartbreaking. I couple read this one with my chapter mate and page partner (my wife). We listened to the audiobook while we read along with physical copies.

This book will grab you from the first paragraph. It’s raw, honest, heartbreaking, gut-wrenching, and inspirational. We follow Viola Davis’ life from her impoverished childhood to her rise as an award-winning actress. The writing was amazing, and she narrated the audiobook, giving it the cherry on top. This book was incredible. I’ve always been a fan, but I now have an insane amount of respect for her. Check your triggers for this one, please.

Quote: “I owned every single piece of my story. And the moment I claimed it, I was free.”
