I love the way Hillerman develops the characters while weaving an engaging mystery. You feel like you know the characters in the story and really want them to be successful in their quest.

The time line carries the story. An accurate description of the Viet Nam war, the mixing of many cultures, their struggles together and using their wits to survive. All that while learning there is more to family than what is on the surface.

I was getting close to draft age when the setting of this story occurred. It brought back many emotions I experienced at the time.
This author can write a story that gets you right there in the middle of the action. The narrator delivers the story flawlessly.
