“Honey, I’m home,” he called.
Silence answered him.
He walked down the hallway, noticing the bedroom door half‑open. The bed was a tangled mess, sheets thrown aside as if someone had left in a hurry. Steam drifted from the bathroom, the door cracked just enough to let the light spill out.
John pushed it open.
Maggie stood at the mirror, blow‑dryer roaring in her hand, fixing her hair as if nothing in the world was amiss. The toilet seat was up. The shower tiles were still dripping.
He raised his voice over the noise. “Is someone here?”
She clicked off the dryer and turned, startled. “No, John! Why would you think that? And what are you doing home in the middle of the day?”
John didn’t answer. He stepped back into the bedroom, eyes narrowing at the closet door—closed, but not fully latched.
