In 1900s London, Francine is a ladies' maid, cast off without a character. But she is anything but a victim. Francine has a mission, to help other women survive their prescribed fates, and when she meets another cast-off - poor starving governess Miss Philpot - she transforms her into an independent woman. If she finds romance, so much the better....

Like in A Woman of Substance, we meet a woman who will not accept the fate designed for her. And moreover, she will train others to do the same.

Narrator could have changed voice to be able to tell witch female/ character was speaking. Really like this story.

need different voice separation to tell who is who

Francine is a dangerous woman for she has learned how to work the social system of her time to make things happen. She takes Matilda Philpott under her wing and transforms her into the woman she's always wanted to be but never believed she could. It's a lovely romp!

It's a short story, but the fun concept opens itself up to so many other potential stories that I'm quite looking forward to seeing where the author takes it from here

*Romance level: passionate kisses
*Religion: use of "Gawd"; Francine is a doubting agnostic, but at least 2 supporting characters believe in God, story is secular

(4.5 stars) - What a fun story!

I enjoy the stories by Alicia Cameron and the readers do a good job of having distinct vocalizations, mostly. That said the character's behaviors are completely unrealistic for the time period. The main point of this review is that this release combines Francine with Miss Philpott and the Fascinating Mathilde, both of which are enjoyable but not worth purchasing a second time.

Because of the staccatic and up-ticking narrator, it took me a while to get into this. By the middle half, though, I was enjoying it.

Cute
