Head coach of the L.A. Lakers Phil Jackson, producer Henry Hampton, and journalist Nicholas Lehmann on this archival edition of Fresh Air. Jackson talks about coaching prior to leading the Lakers to the championship. Jackson coached the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships with his unique coaching style. Before that he played for eleven years with the New York Knicks, worked as a television color commentator, and coached minor-league for four years. PBS debuted the documentary series, "America's War on Poverty." The five-part series documents President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty, which he declared during his State of the Union Address in January 1964. It included programs like Head Start and Job Corps. Hampton was the executive producer and was also responsible for the Emmy Award-winning PBS series, "Eyes on the Prize." Lehman served as consultant on the series. He's the author of The Promised Land, about the migration of African-Americans from the South to the North. (Original Broadcast Dates: January 16, 1995 and September 30, 1996)Want more Fresh Air?
