Journalist Dennis Covington and actor Nicholas Turturro on this archive edition of Fresh Air. Covington has written Salvation on Sand Mountain about the practice of snake handling in a Southern Appalachian church. Practitioners use snake handling as a kind of "anointing", in a belief that the Holy Spirit comes down to protect them from fear and danger in handling the poisonous snakes. He came to write the book as a journalistic endeavor and it became an exploration of his own faith. He himself handled the snakes. Turturro is a regular on the television series, NYPD Blue, as the young detective James Martinez. His first starting role is in the film, Federal Hill. He also had parts in Spike Lee's films (along with his brother, John) Do the Right Thing, Mo' Better Blues, and Jungle Fever.
