One boy’s invented word becomes a phenomenon beyond his control in bestselling and award-winning author Andrew Clements’s hilarious classic children’s story about creative thought and the power of language.

Is Nick Allen a troublemaker? He really just likes to liven things up at school—and he’s always had plenty of great ideas. When Nick learns some interesting information about how words are created, suddenly he’s got the inspiration for his best plan ever…the frindle. Who says a pen has to be called a pen? Why not call it a frindle?

Things begin innocently enough as Nick gets his friends to use the new word. Then other people in town start saying “frindle.” Soon the school is in an uproar, and Nick has become a local hero. His teacher wants Nick to put an end to all this nonsense, but the funny thing is “frindle” doesn’t belong to Nick anymore. The new word is spreading across the country, and there’s nothing Nick can do to stop it.

I listened to this book while driving my 15 year old to a youth conference. I picked it out for my 9 year old boy who accompanied us on the 4 hour drive. My 15 year old usually listens to his own music, but he had liked this story so much when he was younger, he decided to listen along with us and that is saying something. I enjoyed the story and am proud to say that a word I invented when I was a teenager is still used in my own community. It is a nickname for the local college.

Great for kids!

Nick is a 5th grader who loves words and is fascinated with how dictionaries come into being. He wants to see if he can get everyone called a pen a "frindle." His teacher, Ms. Granger, believes that it is all a silly distraction. This battle of wills is a funny, sweet story. I loved it.

a classic story for the whole family
