The driving of the golden spike at promontory Summit in Utah on May 10, 1869, almost didn’t happen. No history book mentions this crucial event. Youthful Will Braddock was one of the few people who knew about this. Leland Stanford, former governor of California and now president of the Central Pacific Railroad, is bringing the golden spike to the ceremony to commemorate the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. Young Irish thug Paddy O’Hannigan, Will’s long-time antagonist, sneaks aboard Stanford’s train, grabs the spike, steals Will’s horse, and races away. Will must pursue Paddy and regain the spike before the railroad officials discover it is missing. If he fails, he, his girl friend, Jenny McNabb, and his sidekick, Homer Garcon, will stand to be accused of being the thieves.

This book is an outstanding finish to Robert Lee Murphy's The Iron Horse Chronicles series. I am sorry to see it end as I truly enjoyed my time witnessing the building of the Transcontinental Railroad through the eyes of my two favorite characters; Will and Jenny. I felt like the historic details provided by the author transported me back in time. I am not sure I would be brave enough to face the challenges that Will and Jenny, along with the real historic characters woven into the store, did at that time in our American history. I also learned a lot about the history of the railroad, and how people survived back then thanks to the author's extensive knowledge about that time period. I look forward to reading, and listening, to the author's next action packed adventure.

I enjoyed the narrator, Brian James Stenberg, who really found his voice and pace in this novel.

Excellent ending to a fantastic trilogy!
