American Christianity teaches the centrality of the individual: my will, my experiences, my decision, my heart, my work, and my dedication. Yet we couldn't be more unaware that Christ and His saving and comforting work are being lost. Our minds and hearts are captivated in some way by those who often preach the Christian instead of Christ.

Author Bryan Wolfmueller sounds the alarm against the false teaching and dangerous practices of Christianity in America. He offers a beautiful alternative: the sweet savor of the Gospel, which brings us to the real comfort, joy, peace, freedom, and sure hope of Christ.

Rev. Bryan Wolfmueller is one of the most valuable introductions to Lutheranism I've come across. After following him in YouTube for some time, I finally purchased a copy of this book and am very pleased to see it's more of his friendly, approachable but knowledgeable demeanor while standing firm on the Holy Scriptures and their interpretations from the Lutheran Confessions.

This critique of American Evangelicalism is even more valuable with the Reverend's own background as a former evangelical. I was easily able to connect with his perspective since I too come from this background and am now transferring into the Lutheran Church.

Perhaps a bit lengthier than other introductory works, it nevertheless offers a solid foundation upon which to build your understanding of what major beliefs Lutherans hold, why they hold them, and how they compare to their Evangelical counterparts.

I look forward to the next chance I can dig into a Wolfmueller book. Excellent work, Pastor!

Pastor Wolfmueller does an excellent job recounting his years of experience in the American evangelical church, which were very similar to my own. His summary was extremely accurate, and his presentation of the Lutheran alternative highly compelling.

An excellent summary of the Biblical Gospel and why it is lacking in the American church

Every Christian needs to read this book! It will challenge you, it will teach you, but most of all it will point you to your Savior Jesus the Christ. The author lived American Christianity, he speaks from experience, but more than that, he points the reader to Jesus. You will not be disappointed, I promise.

Christianity is about The Christ, not the Christian.

This book helped me take a more critical look at my faith and understand the shortcomings of the churches I grew up in. Can’t recommend it enough!
