Hear the Wind Sing is the first novel by Haruki Murakami. First published in the June 1979 issue of Gunzo, one of the most influential literary magazines in Japan, it was published one month later as a book.

Hear the Wind Sing is the first book in the "Trilogy of the Rat," a series of independent novels that include Pinball, 1973 and A Wild Sheep Chase, followed by the epilogue Dance Dance Dance.

This book is the first of Murakami’s Rat novels, published early in his career and reminiscent of Kerouac’s On the Road in its style. There are flashes in this novel of Murakami’s future brilliance - his writing is exquisite and his observations about life in 1970s Japan offer an intriguing look into daily life. I look forward to continuing this series.

I had no idea what a slice of life story would even be like in story form but this is as chill as it gets.
