Hey, Sport! It’s Me, Your Dad. isn’t a self-help audiobook: it’s advice from one man to any son, regardless of age, that could use some fatherly perspective. Created from real conversations with the authors’ sons and nephews, it’s the kind of talk a dad has with his son over some pizza and chicken wings when the truth matters more than good vibes. It’s not going to lie to you about “the system” or belittle you for being a man and going through some stuff in your life. At all times, it tries to meet you, a real person, in the actual world you will have to navigate through. 100% authentic “DADvice:” sometimes funny, sometimes awkward, but always coming from a place of love and real life experience.

From talking about surviving school, puberty, leadership, and (yes) sex and relationships, the quick daily advice contained within are not commandments from above, but lessoned learned and shared. Because being a man isn’t about acting tough or getting everything right, it’s about showing up, learning, and trying again with a better head and sharper heart. A lot of self-help for boys and young men want you to feel powerful by making yourself a victim. This audiobook, will just treat you like a regular guy who has the potential to become great with just a little bit more wisdom and perspective. Real men look out for future men.

A lot of the advice was for boys from a men's perspective, and I think that can be useful. The late chapter was the most interesting to me, because it was based on the wives views about why they chose their husbands. A lot of the insight from earlier in the book were there too, but also some additional things to think about as a young man looking for a good wife.

The book is very different from his other ones, being non-fiction a less humorous, but it does feel like it comes from the heart. I think it works best for young men who need advice, or for dad's who need to talk to their sons and need a starting point. The author does sound more comfortable in his reading, like he is finding his voice in the booth. Definitely an improvement there. Good listen.

The book was more direct than I expected. This was likley because of the author's military backgroud and experience with two boys. He seemed to be aware that not all advice will applpy to every kid, but just offering it to the kids that need to hear it will hopefully help some boys in need of a little guidence.
