She was a sensible woman, he was a man who could drive a woman senseless with desire...

Gareth Fitzallen is celebrated for four things: his handsome face, his notable charm, his aristocratic connections, and an ability to give the kind of pleasure that has women begging for more. Normally he bestows his talents on experienced, worldly women. But when he heads to Langdon's End to restore a property he inherited - and to investigate a massive art theft - he lays plans to seduce a most unlikely lady.

Eva Russell lives a spinster's life of precarious finances and limited dreams while clinging to her family's old gentry status. She supports herself by copying paintings while she plots to marry her lovely sister to a well-established man. Everyone warns her of Gareth's reputation, advising her to lock her sister away. Only it is not her sister Gareth desires. One look and she knows he is trouble. One kiss, however, proves she is no match for this master of seduction.

I love this voice artist. She does a variety of accents well and does a good job with both female and male voices. It was my first time "reading" anything written by Madeline Hunter, but the writing is superior to typical historical romance, and everything seems plausible. Finally a story about people other than lords and ladies!

Great writing & narration; story beyond ordinary

I found this book boring. Lots of sex and not much else. The "mystery" was glaringly obvious early on in the book.

performance and storyline are excellent. Mary Jane Wells portrays the characters well and compliments a very well written story.

Great romance!

I always enjoy listening to Mary Jane Wells. She is one of my favorites.

I was actually surprised how much I did enjoy this book. I like that the characters were different and not all overly wealthy compared to many Duke type of books. Eva was a strong heroine that did what it took to make sure she was able to care for her sister. I enjoyed the hunt for the paintings and the love story that developed between Eva and Gareth. I definitely want to read the next story and Eva's sister.

Fun Treasure Hunt

First I would like to give my condolences to the family of the author Madeline. I was so saddened to hear of her passing from cancer in April. She is a gifted writer that has brought me much pleasure. The book wasn’t the ordinary predictable romance. It was extremely well written. The narrator was top notch as well. She did a fantastic job bringing out the personalities of the characters.

Best book I’ve read in a while
