I think Willa’s sister Wendy and Guillermo moved to Rome to get a way from Willa’s unhealthy attachment to them. Willa’s tolerable in the third person narrative story, but the stories framed has her letters to Wendy are painful. She presents as borderline with verbose turns of phrase trying to be funny. They are tedious in the novels, unbearable as short stories. In all story forms in the third person narrative Willa is mild, scattered, sweet and loyal to the ones she loves. The first person email letters she’s brash, obnoxious, and at times cruel. I recognize writing - especially to a loved one - can be a cathartic outlet; but as a listener it makes it difficult to bond and align with such an inconsistent personality. The secondary characters and the dogs are easy to like and the author - especially in the novels -builds pace and suspense well. Reader has a lovely tone and is good at differentiating the characters. I would recommend toning down the zeal on Willa’s letters. It just emphasizes Willa’s temperamental behavior. I would like Willa to get some therapy to work on her attachment issues and erratic mood swings. She has a good fictitious life - murders and crimes aside - she should appreciate it.
