Would you rather know a truth that makes you feel hopeless, or keep believing the lies? Beloved and bestselling author Colleen Hoover returns with the spellbinding story of two young people with devastating pasts who embark on a passionate, intriguing journey to discover the lessons of life, love, trust--and above all, the healing power that only truth can bring.
Sky, a senior in high school, meets Dean Holder, a guy with a promiscuous reputation that rivals her own. From their very first encounter, he terrifies and captivates her. Something about him sparks memories of her deeply troubled past, a time she's tried so hard to bury.
Though Sky is determined to stay far away from him, his unwavering pursuit and enigmatic smile break down her defenses and the intensity of the bond between them grows. But the mysterious Holder has been keeping secrets of his own, and once they are revealed, Sky is changed forever and her ability to trust may be a casualty of the truth.
Only by courageously facing the stark revelations can Sky and Holder hope to heal their emotional scars and find a way to live and love without boundaries. Hopeless is a novel that will leave you breathless, entranced, and remembering your own first love.

So, this book starts with a prologue that left me about 99.9% confused. I could tell something was going to happen, something big–profound. Half way through the book, I thought I had it all figured out and, BAM!, I was only half right. I had no idea, didn't see it coming, what was going to happen. What the big secret was until it was revealed and it shocked me. But it was a twist and it was a great and well thought out one.
Hoover is excellent with character development. Even in her Slammed series, I found that I felt like I knew ever single character. In this book, Holder and Sky were just amazing. Sky's friends were incredible and they weren't even in the story that much, but even without their physical presence we knew about them, heard from them, and related with them.
The name of the story is just super clever and has so much more to do with the story than just being Hopeless. These two main characters were dealt a shitty ass life, hand, and were strong and they survived. They'd never be "right" again, because what they endured was just too much, but would survive together.
Holder, his name means something as well, at least to me, he held on her to Sky all his life. He's a holder/Holder. He loved her and wanted her and ached for her, for the life she led, for the pain she felt, for the suffering, and for ending up with a decent, good life. He was a misunderstood gentleman, young but so in tune with his feelings. He felt, felt hard and strong, and wore them on his sleeve.
And Sky was so likable and relatable and kind and she grew so much in this story.
I laughed and cried with these two. It was a beautiful, heartbreaking story.

Any additional comments?
I found myself getting quite wrapped up in the emotions of this story, particularly right in the middle with what I consider the MAIN confrontation - but the two main characters, although quite likeable and empathetic, seemed mature WAY beyond their years, even considering their childhoods. I find it very hard to believe any young man could be as sympathetic and understanding as Holder. I would say he would be EVERY WOMAN'S fantasy - good looking, thoughtful, protective, sexy, loving, etc. etc.After that main confrontation, however, the story became a bit monotonous and predictable. Ms. Goethals' performance was quite good and certainly helped me get through the story.Liked it, but main characters not quite believable

But, I'm glad I made myself finish because not only was the second half far more interesting, it also answered ALL of the questions I had in my NOT YA brain from the first half. I have to say it was better than I originally thought, bit also much sadder. For YA and difficult subject matter, this story was well done, and that's why it earned 4 stars from me.
Hardest review ever...

The things both main characters had endured was terrible heartbreaking.
I love the way Holder is taking care of Sky and still letting her have space to be brave and strong on her own.
* Very good storyline
* Good characters descriptions
* No unnecessary descriptions of surroundings
I can’t say more because of the risk of spoilers but I do recommend it.
Performance:
Clear and good pronunciation
I missed a male voice.
Dual narrator always makes the story feel more realistic to me.
Very strong 4 stars 🌟
