Hippo longed to live in the water like the fishes instead of on dry land. But such a change required permission from Ngai, the god of Everything and Everywhere, who decided where the animals, fish, and birds would live.©1986 Bruce Hobson (AKA Mwenye Hadithi) and Adrienne Kennaway (P)1987 Weston Woods Animal Fiction Animals & Nature Animals Fiction Literature & Fiction

Editorial reviews

Both the atmospheric music and Terry Alexander’s expressive performance in Hot Hippo will amuse young listeners.

Mwenye Hadithi’s story follows the sun-parched, land-dwelling Hippo as he longs to live in the water. He pleads his case to the god Ngai, who tells animals where to live. Ngai grants his wish - but with strings attached. Every night, Hippo must leave the water and prove that he has not taken any fish from the sea.

Alexander uses an African accent and his wide-eyed delivery conveys the majesty of the jungle.

Critic reviews

"Warm-colored watercolors along with a starkly rhythmic text create an African atmosphere for this striking picture book." ( Publishers Weekly)
