Do you thrust unsolicited partisan articles upon your spouse? Are you convinced that you can change your coworker’s mind, if you could only argue forcefully enough? Have you gone from befriending to “defriending” the people once closest to you? Don’t give up hope; Dr. Jeanne Safer is here to help.

Since the election of Donald J. Trump, political disagreements have been ravaging our personal relationships like never before. This already widespread phenomenon will continue to grow unless we learn to fight it.

From friends to relatives to lovers, no relationship is immune to this crisis. I Love You, but I Hate Your Politics draws from interviews with every type of politically mixed couple, as well as Dr. Safer’s own experiences as a die-hard liberal happily married to a stalwart conservative. The result is a practical guide to maintaining respect and intimacy in our increasingly divided world.

I Love You, but I Hate Your Politics is sure to educate and entertain anyone who has felt the strain of ideological differences in their personal life. No matter which side of the fence you're on, Dr. Safer offers frank, practical advice for salvaging and strengthening your bonds with your loved ones. This audiobook is required listening for any politically minded friend, relative, or significant other in the Trump era.

Jay and I are celebrating our 10-year wedding anniversary this August. We’ve survived Obama, Trump, whoever was in charge between 2020 and 2024, and Trump. We already practice a lot of the things you talked about from surviving through trial and error.

The angle about personal experiences affecting political perspective was interesting. Also, the effect of losing faculties and control in older populations that I saw in my father. He has improved now that he has had heart surgery and recovered well from what I considered vascular dementia. The changes were fascinating, terrible, and finally a blessing to have him back with us mentally and mostly physically.

Great read for someone trying to understand the other side. Thanks to RealClear for recommending it.

There are not many books like this, maybe not ANY others? I found her take incredibly helpful in my own relationships. We don’t ask the party affiliation of those who stand by us at our hospital bedside. Although this was written during trumps last presidency, still very valid now. A must read for anyone dealing with political differences right now.

It's not easy but it is important to reflect on our own biases. One must not demonize everyone that doesn't align 100% with our political views; because political views are not core values.

I really appreciate the stories in this book.

Perfect for this political divisive attitudes

As someone whose children are on the other side of the table from me politically, this book has given me a new approach to future political discussions. Rather than cringing when certain topics come up, I feel that I can now look at my children as individuals whose political thoughts may be very different from mine, but what will always bind us together is our love and respect for each other. Thank you for opening my eyes to a new way of thinking.

In light of the great divisiveness in our country, I strongly encourage everyone to read this book. Particularly for families who no longer speak to each other or who have shunned a member who has chosen a different political party to follow. I always told our sons that I would never let a political leader get between us. This book has shown me that I’ve been on the right track, but it gave me even more to think about and consider for those outside the family circle. There can be so much more than politics for us to find common ground.
